System Restore Froze

I was unable to get past a blue screen when booting and
started it in safe mode.  I then attemptd to do a system
resrore, and right now it apparently has frozen.  There
has been no progress for the past 90 minutes.  What
should I do?  Can I just shut it down?

Update:

I shut it down and rebooted.  Went back to restore and
tried to restore to yesterday's date, not last week as I
had been doing.  No luck, came back as unsuccessful.
Checked to see if I have the current patch and I do have
the correct version. Tried again, still no luck.  Any
suggestions?

Colleen,

Have only just seen your posts.  You say you have the current patch but
have you actually checked the version of the file smgr.dll in the
Windows\system folder?  If so is it v4.90.0.3003? Do this by locating the
file in Windows Explorer, right clicking and then clicking Properties and
then the version tab.

Yes I did and it is v4.90.0.3003.  Still no luck with
restore.  Even though it said "unsuccessful" some things
have been changed. It doesn't look like anything has been
fixed, just missing some icons that had been changed
yesterday.  Any suggestions would help.

Colleen,

How puzzling.  I hope you get your PC sorted.  Once that is done you might
want to try the following quick test:
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
Could you create a checkpoint?
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored?  Did you see any error messages?
e) Reboot your PC
Was the checkpoint retained?

Since the only thing that you will be restoring is the deleted shortcut
the restore should be quick and if it fails you will have lost nothing.

Mike,
I did exactly what you said, even waited 5 minutes after
setting the restore point (which I could do) before
deleting the shortcut.  I restored it to the checkpoint.
I stated that it was successful, but shortcut was still
there.  Rebooted it again just in case.  Still there.

I tried this twice and same result.  I did notice that
there seems to be 2-4 system checkpoints listed on most
days.  Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Have done virus scans and used Ad-Aware.  The only problem
with Ad-Aware is that I always receive the same critical
updates, which can't be deleted.  They are BDE files some
located in C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\ (I can't seem to actually
locate these files, only the folder for BDE - I don't even
know what this is or if I need it).

Any other suggestions?

Colleen,

Shortcut still there?  That's good which means that system restore
restored the shortcut.  You did delete the shortcut on the desktop after
you created the checkpoint didn't you? I ask since the entire purpose of
the test was to use system restore to restore the deleted shortcut.   If
not then please re-read the steps in my quick test and try again.

As for your problems with AdAware may I suggest you stick to one problem
as AdAware has nothing to do with system restore. You might want to start
a new thread, perhaps in the windowsme.general newsgroup and set out in
detail the problems you are having with AdAware including the version you
are using and the version of the update you are trying to install.

Best of luck.
