Ok, I ventured over to VIA Technologies, found the driver
downloads, chose 'audio' as the type of driver and stopped
when I didn't know which one to choose.
My Sound, video and game controllers in device mgr shows
the audio controller as 'VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM)
I looked in in the system portion of device mgr and see
the following:
VIA Tech VT82C686 PCI ti ISA bridge
VIA Tech VT82C686 Power Management Controller
Choices I have at the VIA site that almost match are:
VIA AC97codec incorporated into VT82C686A South Bridge
VIA AC97codec incorporated into VT82C686B South Bridge
Which would you choose? Is there somewhere I can find the
answer within my system?
Thanks Noel.

This is the one I use:
http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/audio/68MU220b.zip.
It's for both. Later drivers than that simply don't work on mine (though
they're supposed to). On the exact same system the later WDM drivers do work
in XP.
Make a System Restore point before installing and if they don't work,
revert.

I downloaded and installed this but it didn't improve
things. Am I supposed to do it in save mode or remove the
current drivers in device mgr. or something else? Still
slow to boot.

Worth checking while in Safe Mode that you only have one instance of each
driver installed - look in Device Manager.

Somewhere I came across recommendations that after removing sound or video
devices via safe mode and then reinstalling that it is a good idea to
reinstall DirectX. I know that has had an effect for me, but don't remember
details anymore. May have been game audio related.

In theory, it should have no effect on DX - but I wouldn't like to put
serous money on it!
Belarc Advisor may come to the rescue again - download and install it after
the 'reinstall' and then run it, and see what's broke - reinstall whatever
it says to..

Tried what is noted below. Belarc identified one quick
fix that I quickly fixed. No improvement.
Could this be a Bios problem? Wouldn't be surprised if I
messed up the bios earlier.
Or could it be a memory issue? How could I find out if my
128MB is insufficient?
Thanks for the put on my issue. Much appreciated :)

Usually, the only options in BIOS are on or off - and if it was off then you
wouldn't be seeing anything!
128MB RAM should be fine - I've run ME in 64MB without problems (although
it's rather slow in general)
Let's go back to the start, and restate the problem..... (check me on this)
You're getting a long hold in the boot sequence, which seems to originate
from the Audio mixer or Audio Renderer part of the drivers.....
Removing ALL audio drivers while in Safe Mode, and allowing Windows to
reinstall on the reboot, made no difference.
You've upgraded the drivers, and checked that you only have on instance of
each in the Sounds & Multimedia section of the DM, while in Safe Mode?
Perhaps we're looking in the wrong place?
If you're using Bootlog Analyser, then uncheck the 'Show delays' box, and
check the 'Show failures' box
see what that has to say

You're right, long hold in boot sequence. Seems to
originate from the Audio mixer or Audio Renderer part of
the drivers.
I went back in safe mode, removed all audio and multimedia
devices from device manager. Shut down for 1/2 hour. Re-
booted and allowed windows to re-install with me pointing
it to the updated driver folder that I downloaded
earlier. It asked if I should keep the .dll files I had
as they were more recently dated. I did. Didn't help,
still slow boot. I took another shot at it and instead
answered 'no' when asked if I should keep the .dll files.
Still no better. I rebooted again in the logged mode.
Here's the BLA file showing failures and delays.

Maybe I'm not re-installing things correctly. Can you
give step by step direction on the do's and dont's when re-
installing the drivers. I feel as though I'm guessing a
little bit.
Your thoughts and guidance are as always greatly
appreciated.

Ah - right at the end there, you have two 'file not found' failures
MRCI.VXD appears to be related to Drivespace/Doublespace - which definitely
should NOT be running on your system, unless you're using compression on
other drives, or using FAT16 on drive C: (in which case, with that failure,
I'd suspect that the system wouldn't boot!)
It may be that you disabled doublespace/drivespace without removing the
entry in the VXD area - try this
Open MSCONFIG, and click on the Static VXDs tab - look for the entry for
MRCI.VXD, and uncheck it. - reboot and see if that reduces the time,
WRT your drivers, I think you'd best download and run Belarc Advisor -
www.belarc.com - removing the later-dated files has possibly broken a few
windows updates, which will need to be reinstalled.
for the other entries, you need to look at the whole log, and try and work
out exactly which files the two unidentified failures refer to (make sure
that you have the list in time order - it'll be easier to check through)
If you want, email me the log, and I'll have a look at the whole thing

I looked in the Static VXDs and MRCI.VXD wasn't there.
I re-ran Belarc and it showed everything ok.
I'll re-install the drivers after removing them in safe
mode. I'll use the newest dated .dll files this time just
to have the latest and greatest installed.
I have no idea what doublespace/drivespace is. I only
have a C drive (hard drive) and A drive (floppy). No idea
what compression is so I must not be using it ;).
I'll look at the entire BLA file and see if anything
stands out. Otherwise I'll take you up on your offer to
email it to you.
Thanks Noel!

Hmmm - something has to be calling MRCI.VXD.......
Thanks for sending me the bootlog file! (I' gave a quick response by email)
The interesting thing here is that the MRCI.VXD file is actually loaded OK
at the next attempt a few lines later - seemingly after being created,
perhaps, by a call to MRCI2.VXD (although there's no corresponding load
success message that I can see
This appears again to be related to your modem - so it may be a hardware
problem that is causing a software glitch.
