Can not access windows componets in either the add/remove
programs or disk cleanup utility. I receive this error
message , RUNDLL32 has caused an error in SETUPX.DLL>.
How do I get them back in there without doing a Factory
Restore (compaq)

Your setupx.dll error is usually the result of having deleted some empty
folders in the Program Files folder that were placed there when Win Me was
installed that are used for optional components of Win Me.  Then I suspect
you used a registry cleaner which then removed some necessary entries
required for Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup to function because the
target folders were no longer present.  You can avoid this happening in
future by not deleting such folders and similarly not deleting any values
in the key
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID

I would have attached a zip file containing a reg file containing all of
the required entries to my reply but since you  are using the web
interface to these newsgroups rather than a proper newsreader you would
never see the attachment.  If you want me to send you the repair patch
please e-mail me at mikem@mvps.org.

Hi Mike,

I'm having the same problem with Windows setup in Add/Remove program for the
reasons mentioned by you. I've noted down the precautions for future. I shall
be obliged if I get the repair patch. Thanks!
