I quit on an issue because my text arrived at your end jumbled and Mike Malty
thought I was just a sloppy, arrogant typist. Would like to resume if this
text is formatted correctly.  Thanks!

Craig,

Text arrived quite readable.

Nowhere earlier did I say that you were either sloppy or arrogant but
rather that I was unable or rather unwilling to try and follow your
posting as I had difficulty interpreting and following what you were
trying to say.

Thanks Mike. No offense intended on the adjectives I created about me as I
would have felt that if it were me. I'm the System Restore quit again guy. To
Review: No Chk Point created BUT will make Manual Date. That Manual Date does
NOT Restore a {.txt] file Saved to Desktop via NotePad & then Deleted after
the Chk Pt Made. [smgr.dll] is correct 4.90.0.3003 via July MS 290700 DnLoad
( which fixed error msg "Cannot make chk point"). Disable Restore Box NOT
chk'd. 600 MB allotted for Restore. Have Disabled Restore to Wipe All Out &
Start Over. Belarc list looks OK against MS Update List. No Error messages
show up. Scanreg /fix tried. Any other ideas to get regular Chk Points made
AND Have Them Work? Many Thanks for the patience!!

Craig,

System Restore (SR) does not monitor changes to files with a txt extension
so it comes as no surprise that your test file was not restored.  SR is
only interested in what might be considered system files rather than user
data files.  SR monitors some 550 odd file types but excludes common user
data files such as those with a jpg, wav, avi, doc, wri, txt, dbx, xls and
wmv extensions.

To check that system restore is working correctly try the following quick
test:
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore you PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored?  Did you see any error messages?

Shortcuts, which are files with a LNK extension although this is hidden
when viewed using Windows Explorer, are amongst the 550 odd file types
monitored by system restore.

Oh - and BTW, your text is back even worse than it was before!! (at least
here) - I couldn't get to first base on it.
(I have to admire your persistence, Mike!)

Locked out?  You could always try using a proper news client to access
these newsgroups rather than the pathetic Microsoft web interface.  You
have one already - it's called Outlook Express.  :-)

Lack of automatic system restore checkpoints:
There can be many reasons for lack of regular automatic system created
checkpoints including running programs such as seti@home, folding@home or
other similar programs, or because a background application is fooling Win
Me's state manager.exe into thinking that the system is not idle although
this is not in fact the case.  Examples of the latter utility include v4
of MotherBoardMonitor (but not v5), Cacheman, The Cleaner (TCActive and
TCMonitor) and Norton's System Doctor where users have reported use of the
Disk Health sensor has prevented the creation of automatic checkpoints.
NAV7 has also been reported as causing similar problems in certain
circumstances. Other users have reported similar behaviour due to their
always on cable or ADSL connection continually polling their HD and thus
giving the impression that the system is never idle.

A significant number of users report that 3.x versions of Zone Alarm also
prevent the creation of automatic checkpoints but this didn't seem to
affect all ZA users including myself for a long time but my Win Me system
stopped making automatic checkpoints some time ago however now that it has
ZA Pro 5.1.011 this problem seems to have been resolved.  Similar problems
have been experienced by BlackIce users and other software firewalls have
also been reported to cause some users similar problems.

One user has reported that B's CLIP UDF packet writing software
(http://www.bhacorp.com/products/clip/clip.html) prevented the creation of
automatic checkpoints and another that they had experienced the same
problem with Roxio's DirectCD.  Another user has also reported that
CookieWall by AnalogX will prevent automatic checkpoints being made if its
"Scan for cookies every .... seconds" is set to a value less than 121
seconds (two minutes).

Outlook Worked Fine. Via IE6 I got locked out again but find if I Delete
Cookies and Files in Tools/Internet Options I can get back in. Will stick
with Outlook. Beginning to think periodic MS Updates are Designed to create
enough havoc in older OS's like Me to make people upgrade OS. Many Thanks
again!  Craig
