Hello,

Is this item a 'System Tool'? If so:

I wish to find something on the ME CD. I place it into my
CDROM drive.

I go to Search and select G: Windows Me (G)

I enter the file I wish for. No result. So I enter Win9x.
It appears in the right pane. I right click on the folder
choose Explore and see the listing. I now type, in Search,
the item I seek. No result. So I select any file I can see
and enter its name in search. No result. What am I
doing/thinking incorrectly? Thanks.

Ben.

Using TweakUI, Ben?? - #2

Note - there are a few cautions with TweakUI:-
1) Do *not* change the first icon from "My Documents" on the Desktop tab
2) Do *not* uncheck: Search Results on the Desktop tab
3) Do *not* hide the Tweak UI icon on the Control Panel tab
4) Do *not* uncheck: Show Control Panel on Start Menu on the IE tab
5) Do *not* uncheck: Shell enhancements on the IE tab
6) To move "My Documents" folder, right-click on the Folder, and click
Properties.

Hello Noel, and no, Noel, Those 'don'ts' have deterred me
for years. No TweakUI.

My problem is one of ignorance and curiosity, my first
post explains my dilemma. Honest.

I find I can get no results to any search using my WinMe
CD as the victim.

Take my wanting something stored in the bas22.cab - the
first item I can see in the right pane (I clicked Explore
on the base2.cab folder)is 1394bus.sys in the left pane of
the Search window I see: Look in: H:\Win9x\BASE2.CAB I
type this first item in 'Search for files...'
I click 'Search Now' and get 'Search is complete. There
are no results to show.'Makes no bl..y sense to this dummy.

Supposing I need an item from the ME CD but don't know
whereabouts it is on the CD - let us use sndvol.exe. How
do I go about searching for it?

There it is in a coconut shell, Noel.

Ben,

Where are you entering the filename you are looking for when searching IN
rather than FOR a cab file?  You need to enter the required filename in
the "Containing text" box and leave the "Search for files or folders
named" box empty.  So to locate the cab file containing 1394bus.sys you
search the folder H:\Win9x for files containing the string 1394bus.sys.
This then tells you the CAB file containing 1394bus.sys is indeed
BASE2.CAB.  Double click on BASE2.CAB and lo and behold you can see its
entire contents (166 files) after which you can select the required file
and drag a new copy to your desktop.

Incidentally using Search like this is not really necessary and instead I
would suggest you use MSConfig (Start | Run and enter MSConfig in the box
and click OK).  On the General tab you will find "Extract File...", click
this, enter the name of the file to be extracted and click OK.  If asked
enter the location of the Win Me cab files (C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or
C:\Windows\Options\Install or in your case the folder on your CD,
H:\Win9x) and the location where you want to place the extracted file and
then click OK.

Hello Mike,

That is very clear and, once again with your advice, I

I am about to post another issue here in Setup vis a vis
PChealth and for your attention. Your response will be

Glad to have been able to help Ben and hoping that Noel doesn't get too

Now off to setup.  No new post?  Have you posted your query there yet?

Yes - I've been having a few problems..... - the latest of which is that BB
doesn't work!! :-(

after best part of an hour (over three calls to the helpline), we've decided
that it's hardware, so they're getting the engineers to look at it (a line
test was OK, I swapped the microfilters around, unplugged everything, and
the DSL light still flashes on the router).

Funny thing was that the first call I made, I had to hang on while the
'techie' crashed and rebooted her machine - and then answer exactly the same
ID questions again :)  (poetic justice?)

Now all I have to do is wait...................
(no - I'm not holding my breath!)

Are you synching with the exchange?  Does your router give details of S/N
ratio and attenuation?

Noel,

Since you can't synch it would appear to be either a faulty router or
something wrong at the exchange with the card you are connected to in the
DSLAM.  Or you simply haven't been connected yet.

Best of luck for tomorrow or whenever.

According to one of the calls, the line tests out OK - there's an
engineering call in for it to check.

Let's hope it gets sorted out quickly.  At least you have the comfort of
knowing that if its the router then it's down to BT to give you a new one
rather than have to go through the hoops with dabs, Novatech or the like.

Lets hope you get it sorted out soon Noel, still thinking about the cost
here as to whether it's worth it for me.

Joan,

Have a look at the Virgin deal
(http://www.virgin.net/internetaccess/broadband/index.html?buspart=157).
£17.99 per month, no 12 month contract, no connection fee, 3GB per month
but you do have to buy a modem (£19.99).  Also at £17.99 pm is Wanadoo
(http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/time/bb_need1.htm?bbType=opt1) which includes
the modem but the download allowance is less at 2GB per month and I
suspect may also be a 12 month contract.

Of course, replace the modem with a router and network all your PCs and
you will not only have a faster connection but also possibly be able to do
away with one of your phone lines.  :-).

Pleased to read your connection is now up and running.

BTW v21 charge a £70 activation fee (monthly contract) although if Joan
were to sign up this month she would get two months free so over twelve
months v21 works out at £26 more than Virgin albeit uncapped.

I'll have a look at those Mike, Onetels broadband is about ?30 a month if
I remember.
Being a bit thick here but do you have to pay separate for phone calls on
top of the broadband cost ?
I don't think John would want to get rid of both lines as one is actually
for the fax machine and the other is the normal line even though both are
used for internet access.

Those monthly charges are on top of the BT charge for line rental and call
charges.  I think EasyNet and Bulldog are the only UK ISPs that at the
current time totally unbundle the line and include line rental in their
charges with Bulldog possibly being the only one that also provides voice
calls - and this currently for only 61 exchanges in the London area - £40
per month, 4Mbit connection including line rental with call charges on
top.

Without taking into consideration the exchange rate.......here is what I pay
for cable......$45.00 + 15% tax.  (we pay 15% tax on just about everything)
No other extras.  No local telephone charges.

I do not pay for local phone calls ever!!  Only long distance.  And I can
call anywhere in North America and the UK for 5 cents per minute......not
too shabby!!  I just realized that after phoning Scotland a couple of times.
Didn't realize that the UK was included.  So look out, you all.......grin.

But if I convert that to Cdn......at June's exchange rate, it would be
$135.00!!!  But I guess it is all relative......as in your GBP buying what
my CDN $ would.  (a delicate shudder here......lol)

My comments were about ADSL connections.  I'm not really aware of the
costs of cable connections in the UK (there are just two providers now,
telewest and ntl) neither of which, AFAIK, are available to any of Joan,
Noel or myself.  The cable packages all include phone and TV as basics
with a net connection as an extra.  Will Denny has a ntl connection.

Most UK ADSL services are run as add-ons to a basic BT supplied line
meaning a user has to pay both the BT line rental (circa £10 per month)
plus whatever their ISP is charging for the net connection which can range
from around £15 to the sky dependant on the speed and in some cases the
amount of traffic (GB) sent and received by the user.  The cost of phone
calls is on top of that, either charged per call and possibly dependent on
duration or one can buy a package from either BT or a third party operator
including some packages where all UK calls are free.  In my case I now use
a third party operator that charges me 1p for each UK call regardless of
duration other than to premium numbers and mobiles/cells which as you
probably gathered when you were in the UK earlier this year are still
quite expensive.  Calls to the US and Canada are 2p per minute both fixed
and cell which isn't so different to your 5c per minute..

My ISP has what is called "unbundled" some exchanges and on those
exchanges offers an all in voice and uncapped 4Mb net service for £40 per
month with no payment made by the user to BT which equates to around £30
per month for the 4Mb ADSL service.

So for myself I currently pay BT around £10 per month for my line, most of
my calls I route through 18866 and for net access I use a 2Mb ADSL
connection provided by Bulldog.  During the first half of next year I
expect to either move to the 4Mb Bulldog service I mentioned earlier that
includes voice calls or retain my BT line and change from my 2Mb Bulldog
connection to an 8Mb connection from UKOnline/EasyNet.  Which one rather
depends on the current pricing and contract details of these two providers
next April when my exchange is unbundled and those two options become
available to me.

Thanks for that Mike, when I thought about it later of course it dawned on
me that would be the case <g>
At the moment I have to pay BT line rental on both lines plus caller
display and that works out at ?23 a month. All my calls and internet go
through Onetel and that costs me on average ?35 a month for internet
access whenever and as long as we want on both lines plus on one line the
evening and weekend calls are free to anywhere in the country, plus
international calls are considerably cheaper than BT on both lines.
