hello

we have a Compaq Presario 7000US desktop, running windows ME.

I do have USB ports, but how can i find out whether they are USB 1 or
USB 2?

Hi Howldog,

Seeing as how the Presario 7000US came with WindowsME, and WinME doesn't
support USB2.0 natively, then it would be a fair bet to assume that you have
USB1.1. The speed of the USB is determined by the motherboard hardware.
The user guide that came with you PC will tell you exactly. You do have the
user guide don't you? <g>
It's not a worry though. ALMOST any USB2.0 device should downgrade
gracefully and work OK in your USB 1.1 port. The only hitch being the slower
speed. But USB 1.1 is pretty quick anyway.
If you really have to have USB 2.0. a 4 port USB port card to plug into a
PCI slot is only approx $20-00 AUS anyway (about US$15-00)

Good Luck.

yeah, but its Compaq, and its a pretty sparse manual. I looked but
didnt see it.... could have missed it tho.

the wife wants one of the new HP photosmart printers, that says USB 2
interface. Any clue offhand as to whether it would still work with USB
1?

bought one already at lunch today. the machine in question is at home,
cant remember if it has an open PCI slot or not.... if it doesnt, i
guess i'll get a refund for the port card

thanks for the reply

Hi Howldog,

I don't know for sure if the HP printer will work, but my Canon i540 printer
is USB 2.0, and it works fine on USB 1.1.
My USB memory stick is USB 2.0, and it also works fine.
My Canon CyberShot camera is USB 2.0, and it also works OK.
There's a fair chance your HP printer will be OK, but your new USB 2.0 card
will ensure that it works.

Good luck.
