An article in PCWorld (Oct 2004, p. 81) suggested disabling FastFind in order
to stop costant interruptions of the defrag utility.  Article suggested
typing msconfig command and searching for and unchecking Fastfind box.  I
couldn't find such a box anywhere.  Antivirus software and other programs
have been disabled, so these do not account for the interruptions as far as I
can tell.  Any suggestions?

Try rebooting the computer into Safe Mode and running Defrag from
there.

Good luck

ScanDefrag will efficiently run the MS or Norton disk utilities.
The log will list all of the running programs and you can close
the unprotected ones by using Restrictive Mode. See the
ReadMe for a more detailed explanation.

Control start up programs by using a list like Pacs-Portal
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php
and a viewer like Process Explorer from Sysinternals
http://www.sysinternals.com/

"Find Fast" is listed in Pacs-Portal.

I had similar problems and have also read about the solutions given by others
for your question.  Let me offer a possible solution that worked for me, but
may not work in all cases.  I simply made my Defrag a Scheduled Task to do
when my PC is idle (late at night).  And, to date, my Defrag has worked fine.

Well the thing is you can never tell, 'cause some people don't bother
posting back with results.
