Hi guys, maybe you can help me.
System was working fine.
Installed Studio 8 SE to interface a Gateway Camcorder. It
didn't work so I removed the software using it's Uninstall
feature.
Post uninstall, my system started acting a little strange.
One example is that when playing a game of solitaire, card
movement is slow and jerky.
Attempted to do a System Restore and although there were a
lot of checkpoints listed as available I got the folowing
results.
1) The Restoration In Progress screen came up but nothing
happened.
The progress bar stayed at 0% and there was no hard
drive action.
2) I did a Ctrl-Alt-Del to stop the Sys Restore Task and
got a Restoration Was Unsuccessful screen saying "cannot be
restored to 'date'. No changes have been made to your
computer"
3) Attempted another System Restore from a different
checkpoint but got the same results.
4) Per an old Mike M post, I checked that the smgr.dll
version was correctly listed as 4.90.0.3003 in my
Windows\System folder.
Can you help me resolve this. Thanks

Job,
Whilst you are waiting on a guru, have you tried a SCANREG
/RESTORE
from the Run box?? Nice thing about this little effort is that you can go
back to where you were if it doesn't help......however, may be all you need.
Heirloom, old and hope it works

Update--I deleted Temp Internet Files, Temporary Files,
History, Cookies, and Recent Files. Some of the strangeness
cleared up, system responding faster, card movement quick
and smooth.
I tried heirloom's (old and the "home" still let's him out
occassionally) SCANREG /RESTORE suggestion but it did not
help.
I still can't do a System Restore. I get the same results
as stated in my original post. Hope you can provide one of
your magical cures.

Job, if you have a startup disk reboot your system with it and on the prompt
type scanreg/restore like Heirloom suggested and choose the one date with no
error. This protocol has saved me alot of times without the restore working.
If this method worked, discard all your restore points as they are corrupted
and create a new one rightaway. Good luck!

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your input. I am able to restore the registry
fine, it's System Restore that is giving me problems. Not
knowing what else to do looks like I may have to purge all
the System Restore checkpoints and start afresh.
P.S. You said "choose the date with no error". When I went
to scanreg /restore I saw 4 or 5 dates none of which
mentioned errors. Should I expect to see indications of
errors?

Job, rule of thumb says choose the earliest one. If there is an error in
anyone of them it will tell you. Thus go with the earliest. Regarding the
restore points, like Mike M have mentioned many times, try making a shortcut
on your desktop and make a manual restore point. Delete the shortcut on your
desktop and try restoring and see if your restore works. If after restoring
the shortcut comes back then you are in business. Good luck.
