Just got around to installing this free tool.  Wow.  What a powerful and
detailed tool:

ShellExView v1.10 - Shell Extensions Manager
Copyright (c) 2003 - 2004 Nir Sofer
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

So please explain briefly how you use it, Mike.

Jack,

The most common reason for my using ShExView has been when I have been
unable to delete certain AVI files due to them being in use.  The fix
being to open ShExView and to temporarily disable the AVI Properties
handler.  Other times I've used it have been to temporarily disable shell
extensions that add to the right click context menu entries such as
WinZip, WinRAR, UltraEdit, etc.  I also use an application MP3Ext which is
an Explorer add-on that adds several columns to Explorer relating to ID3
fields in MP3 files.  Sometimes I want to disable this as it can
occasionally seem to get "confused".  ShExView enables me to do all of
this and more.

I'm sure Chris can provide many far more useful examples.  ShExView also
allows you to see what might have been added behind your back (sort on
Product name or Company).

I've just noticed that ShExView is now v1.10.  I was still using v1.01.  I
see there are some interesting changes including highlighting non OS
extensions that have been added.  Gets better and better.

Mart,

I nearly missed Jack's reference to 1.10 rather than 1.01.  I don't know
what it was but something made me return to his post after my initial
reply and then it dawned on me what it was that had caught my attention.
:-)

Done all your patching yet?  I prefer on my main PC to install each patch
separately so I can log the changes and am not overly pleased that on XP
five of the 8 critical patches need a reboot!  At least on the other boxes
I maintain I can install all at once knowing already the changes made by
each one.  Thank Goodness it's only once a month nowadays.

Not on the laptop yet - tomorrow. But, yes on the desktop. Did all 9 in one
go - total confidence?  (This man's a fool <g>)

BTW - Since the xmas catastrophe, the desktop is now running as sweet as a
nut (subject to the 9 patches <g>) I now rely on XP Firewall and the one in
my Router and have abandoned ZA. That's speeded things up a bit too.

I'll give you a bell sometime using my 1p 'phone calls - thanks for the
advice/recommendation.

I'm still hanging on to ZA simply because it gives me some idea as to what
is calling out but am becoming increasingly tempted to drop it and fall
back on XP's Firewall (and the router of course) as ZA can sometimes get
into a frenzy and really consume cpu cycles.

Hope to get a chance for a chat sometime soon,

Cheers,

<lol> If you're a fool so am I <vbg> I did them last night all 9 without
any problems and one reboot. I did John's machine this morning and I
must say since going broadband the speed things go through now amazes me <g>

PS: My calls are free in the evenings <g>

Well done Joan! - Thanks for reminding me <g>. I've set my laptop and it's
d/ling now.

The system Mike put me on to is 1p per call, 24/7.

Thanks for all your comments.  I must say Mr. Sofer's tool is very sweet.  I
noticed immediately the column labeling the MS vs. non-MS additional
extensions as a very useful way of immediately identifying possible pests.

BTW, for those of you depending on the router NAT to stop trojans phoning
home, are you configured to receive popup warnings of such activity, or do
you have to review the router activity log to see the evidence of such
activity?
For the casual user, I think the ZA popups are very helpful about warning of
malware attempting to get back to the "mother".  Few such users are capable
enough or disciplined enough to read a log repeatedly, esp., since it most
often has nothing interesting to report.

What do you think?

Jack, re: ZA - I was reluctant to have to abandon ZA for those very reasons
that you and Mike have both highlighted. But it kept 'timing-out' or more
specifically 'locking-out' my ASDL connection - a re-boot seemingly, the
only way I could re-connect. Several uninstalls & reinstalls repeatedly
pointing to ZA as the problem. - Maybe a setting that I have missed?

However, due to the reasons I mentioned previously - along with other issues
(ZATrueVector Security engine) giving me serious grief - I decided,
reluctantly, to pull the plug - it became a pita.  I may revisit at a later
time (next update?) and see if it improves.

In the same circumstances, I think I would have done the same.  Certainly if
neither my DSL provider nor Zone Labs could offer a solution.

OTH, Process Explorer reports just now that the cpu idle time, using a DUN
connection here, is >98%, and no ZA modules are using > 0.5% of cpu time.
In fact, even the notorious Symantec modules are not above 0.5%.
The free ZA firewall is certainly no performance hog here under WinME.

I don't doubt that your experience is different, and you are quite unlikely
to have made a silly configuration error.

It all depends on what the box is doing and being used for.  I have an XP
box here which was last booted 1 week and 19 hrs and 18 mins (that's 187
hours) ago and shows vsmon.exe at 20hr 13 min, explorer at 5:38 and idle
at 135:06.  IOW vsmon has used 10.8% of all cpu cycles since the PC was
last booted.

Eight hours later and I eventually shut down ZA Pro at which time vsmon
cpu usage had risen to something over 22hrs.  More importantly though
memory usage had risen to something over 500MB and even with 1GB of RAM
this was causing the pagefile to increase in size. Something not quite
right and could be due to a problem with UDP packets.

Note this was, as I mentioned earlier, on a box running XP Pro SP2.

Yes he told me about that but I'm with Onetel for everything just have
to pay BT for the line rental which has gone down by half since getting
broadband and being able to get rid of one of my phone lines.
