KB - 17 Mar 2005 01:57 GMT I saw a post mentioning that this tool made one's system "run like when it was new". I went 'ga ga' when I read "runs like new". I did the download and wanted feedback prior to installing and running the program.
Noel had mentioned earlier (i.e. back in July) that he didn't care for registry cleaners as they create problems in software such as Microsoft Works 2000, which I have. My only thought is that I could use the tool, remove and reinstall Works and be good to go.
Certainly I'd back up the current registry should the program make the system go ka-flop.
Feedback is much appreciated.
Thanks again for your support. I respect your judgement and appreciate your time and expertice.

p.s. I did chicken out on the wipe and reinstall post I had provided earlier. Call me a 'clucker' but there were too many posts about problems in doing so. Crippling my system is not an option at this point.
heirloom - 17 Mar 2005 02:50 GMT Can't help you with opinions on the RegMech, but, I can commend you on checking things out before making the leap. Personally, I use jv16 Power Tools when doing anything other than a manual cleaning of the Registry. It does a very good job, the older version 1.3 is still free and I have never had a problem with it. Just my opinion.....I could be wrong. Heirloom, old and may have to get a new box......someday

If I don't get positive feedback on RegMech, I'll be looking for a link to jv16 Power Tools. I've never done any registry cleaning (other than spyware/virus removal ... sigh) on this system. I get a feeling that the registry is a mess, could be wrong though.
Did you see that Spyware Blaster has an update?
Take care Heirloom.

p.s. Need a new box too, but would be too boring without the challenge of keeping it running 8-O.

The new version 3.3 is working like a champ......(thank you, Javacool). Re: the jv16 Power Tools, here is a URL for the free version..... http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/index.html#jv16 It has a number of other great tools......the Reg Cleaner is just one. The nice part is that it doesn't do any cleaning on its' own and makes a backup of anything you choose to dispose of. It will tell you 'why' the entry is no longer valid and allow you to make up your own mind from there. I like it. Heirloom, old and sticks with what works

heirloom - 18 Mar 2005 06:30 GMT It was something in the SpywareBlaster.exe file. Mine would crash before the GUI could open with a Kernel32 error, IPF. The first Beta he sent did the same thing.....when I told him about it, he immediately knew what was wrong and sent me another that worked. That was just before he released the new version. Don't know any details and prob wouldn't understand them if I did. <g> Heirloom, old and ain't no programmer

RegClean 4.1a from Microsoft: Classes.dat only http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q147/7/69.asp
EasyCleaner from ToniArts http://www.saunalahti.fi/tonihele/ecleane.htm
RegCleaner from Jouni Vuorio http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/
Registry Pruner" http://www.Karenware.com/powertools/ Shared DLL's only
After the above tools have been used (or even if you don't use any), run Scanreg /fix from a clean DOS boot.
http://www.winguides.com/registry/ ---
KB, I recommend beginning with the relatively safe Easy Cleaner, while using the info at winguides to help understand what you are seeing and doing. After a month, or so, migrate to one of the more powerful, i.e., more dangerous, tools. I concur with heirloom about jv16, which I occasionally use, too. First, learn how to backup your registry so you can easily revert in the event of an unexpected result. Know how to run scanreg /restore and how to run System Restore from the command line:

KB - 19 Mar 2005 00:36 GMT Jack, I appreciate the detailed thoughtful advice. I've become familiar with the precautionary steps you list (reg backup, reg fix etc.) and I've learned to tread lightly through my learning process of reading NG posts.
I only wonder what you're telling me in your final statement:
"And, most importantly, develop a very good relationship with MVP Mike Maltby, so he can fix your computer's problems when no one else can ..."
If I've offended you in some way, my apologies. I'm reading, learning and listening to the advice given. If there's something I've done that is bothersome, please let me know.
Thanks again for the advice.

You haven't offended Jack as far as I can see. I haven't been following this thread because others seemed to be helping but for some reason chose to read your last post and saw Jack's comments mentioning me. I think he was having a bit of a joke with you and hoping that you don't need to use system restore and have it fail on you as I tend to respond to posters having problems with system restore.

Does this mean we've developed a very good relationship so you can help fix my problems when no one else can? <VBG>
Thanks, Mike. Take care.

I've become [quoted text clipped - 79 lines] > >http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/meetexperts/ > nichol.mspx KB - 19 Mar 2005 05:48 GMT Thanks for the reassurance. I'm in awe of all, even the underdogs, being the superultra underdog that I am. Maybe my alias should be 'SuperUltraUnderdog' <g>.
My WinME system was nearly a dead duck but I did get it back to an relatively steady system. When I say 'dead duck', what I mean is that the system was so very mucked up that when it I booted it, it came up in safe mode, three blank white windows open and no cursor. Talk about a train wreck, it took me three hours to figure out (merely by guessing) how to navigate the system via the keyboard. I did get it up and running but there was a lot of garbage on it and I didn't know how to clean it up. I took it to the shop who cleaned it (for a fair nominal charge) but it was still messed up and their response to my repeated complaints was 'we can't guarantee to get everything, we can reinstall for an additional charge if you'd like'. What service from the folks who sold me the box back in Y2K.
Since then I've taken action to learn more in order to control my own destiny. This forum and hijack this have been my saviors and I frequently visit the sites as the subject has become so very interesting to me.
Thanks again for the reassurance. If I get out of line, just say settle down superultraunderdog <g>.
Take care and I'll see you (black on white that is) around.

Toni Helenius, writer of EasyCleaner, was allowed to use that site for free. Then the owners decided they wanted something back, so started charging for access to his freeware. They were supposed to have stopped the practice about a year ago after he complained about it, but surprise surprise they haven't.
It's still available here: http://personal.inet.fi/busine?ss/toniarts/dwnloads.htm

Shane - 19 Mar 2005 15:35 GMT Do us a favour, Jack? The link I posted and the copy in your reply don't work here. That is, when you click them, they gain a hyphen after the *e* in *business*.
That is, the link *looks* like: http://personal.inet.fi/busine?ss/toniarts/dwnloads.htm but is altered to: http://personal.inet.fi/busine?-ss/toniarts/dwnloads.htm
Remove the hyphen and the link works. Why on earth is OE/IE adding a hyphen??? What's more, if I copy the hyphenated link from the IE address bar and paste it into this post, it loses the hyphen. I suppose that means IE not OE is doing it. Does yours do this?
I have never come across this behaviour before and it has me flummoxed!
Shane

[quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > > > <SNIP> Shane - 19 Mar 2005 15:40 GMT Actually, it's not a hyphen, as looking at the original and my hyphenated rendering of it in the status bar, the original has the *not quite a hyphen* and my rendering of it has the hyphen I added *plus* the character I *thought* was a hyphen!
Shane
btw Blackburn just missed a dead-cert equaliser against Arsenal, but the way they tried to kick Chelsea off the pitch recently, for the first time *ever* I want Arsenal to win. So, yay! Bleedin' North London b*st*rds!

I've seen a number of threads elsewhere about the unwanted appearances of hyphens and other characters in links. The character being $ad a virtual dash. A couple of the OE boys have reported it but whether Microsoft is listening or not could be another matter.

> Ok, thanks Mike. Maybe I'll mosey on over to the OE group. Jack E Martinelli - 19 Mar 2005 22:44 GMT Yes, I'm seeing the same thing here. I've never seen this before.
If I click on your http://personal.inet.fi/busine?-ss/toniarts/dwnloads.htm ,
I get a link in the IE address bar with the additional virtual dash mark, as Mike describes. When I attempt to copy the URL to this post, the virtual mark disappears, just as you observe. Deleting both extra marks in the IE address bar gives the ToniArts page, as desired.
Very odd.

Q for Shane. How did you enter the URL into your message? Did you type it or copy & paste. If copy & paste where from please? At least one of the previous reports I've seen is where the user copied and pasted the URL from a posting in GoogleGroups.

Mike M - 20 Mar 2005 01:48 GMT OK Shane.
That's really helpful. It looks as if the problem is with the latest beta Google Groups rather than with any version of OE. That's a relief.
So for anyone who happens to read this thread, it appears that the current version of Google Groups is adding a virtual dash to some but not URLs. It's been suggested that this is to prevent bots following URLs in posts but probably and hopefully just a bug in the current version of Google Groups.

It would have been nice if Google'd said something about it, perhaps? Presumably, either way, bots can be rewritten to strip virtual characters? Must look at the source for the page sometime.
