Winmgmt Problem

When I try to access System Info, shortly after the Help and
Support screen comes up, I get a Winmgmt dialogue box
"Winmgmt has caused an error in <unknown>".
This occurs when doing either Start>Run>msinfo32 or
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Info.

I did a couple of System Restores (what a wonderful feature)
from different checkpoints but this didn't eliminate the
problem, though I must say I can't remember the last time
that I tried to access Sys Info.

A search for Winmgmt found these:
 WINMGMT.LGC in WINDOWS\APPLOG
 WINMGMTR.DLL in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM
 WINMGMT.EXE in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM
 $WinMgmt.CFG in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM\REPOSITORY
 WinMgmt.log in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WBEM\Logs

The version of WINMGMT.EXE is 1.50.1164.0, Modified June 08,
2000, 17:00

P.S.  While the error was displayed I captured the Registers
and Stack Dump data if it's needed.

Thanks in advance.

Your version of winmgmt.exe is the same as here.

Jack, thanks for your response.  I apologize for taking so
long to get back to you but I have been fighting off a cold.

I verified I have only 'one' file named Windows Update Setup
Files and verified the correct files were in the
.....\Helpctr\Binaries folder.  I also re-registered the
Help Center.  I didn't think the other cases on this link
applied to my problem.

I went to these links (plus others) and ascertained that I
have idea of what they are talking about.

Thankfully my system is still operational because I have no
idea of what to do.
Again thanks.

Try the workaround of disabling PCHealth Data Collection (it does nothing
useful anyhow, and can safely be got rid of) - in two places.

1) Task Scheduler - disable PCHealth Data Collection
2) in MSCONFIG | Startup , uncheck PCHealth (PCHSchd.EXE) - click Apply,
OK - Windows will reboot.

See if that helps.

Hello Noel,  glad you are here.

The PCHealth has been unchecked in MSCONFIG | Startup for a
very long time.  I thought that PCHealth Scheduler in
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Scheduled Tasks was
also disabled.  However, when I checked it several hours ago
I found it was enabled so I disabled it at that time and
restarted.

Those actions did not correct the problem.  When I try to
access Sys Info I still get the "Winmgmt has caused an error
in<unknown>.  In addition, once I'm on the Help and Support
screen and try to select the Conflicts/Sharing item I get a
"Helpctr has caused an error in Kernel32.DLL."

When I try to select any of the other items, I get "Can't
Collect Information, A network error occurred in connecting
to Windows Managment Instrumentation.  Ensure that your
network connection is functioning properly."  (my computer
is a standalone)

Hope this additional info helps your analysis.

This is a new problem to me, Job.

May I suggest using the Dr. Watson tool to attempt a diagnosis:

"How to Troubleshoot Program Faults with Dr. Watson"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;275481

Repost with the pertinent parts of its report, when Sys Info fails on your
system.

Hi Jack,

Please bear with me as I have never used Dr. Watson before,
also I'm not sure what you consider "pertinent parts of its
report".

With Dr Watson running, when I go to System Information, the
Help and Support screen comes up and within a short time I
get a WINMGMT.EXE -Embedding box with "Winmgmt has
caused.....<unknown>."  Clicking on Details gives the
following diagnosis:

The application or one of its DLLs used an uninitialized
function pointer variable or attempted to use a DLL which
has already been freed.

Module Name: <unknown>

Application Name: Winmgmt.exe
Description: Windows Management Instrumentation
Version: 1.50.1164.0000
Product: Windows Management Instrumentation
Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation

--------------------
If the Taskbar is behaving strangely, try exiting Multimedia
background task support module.

Module Name: mmtask.tsk
Description: Multimedia background task support module
Version: 4.90.3000
Product: Microsoft Windows
Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation

Then if I select Conflicts/Sharing I get a HELPCTR.EXE -url
"hcp://system/sysinfo/msinfo.htm box with "Helpctr has
caused.....KERNAL#@.DLL."
Clicking on Details gives the following diagnosis:

The application overflowed its temporary memory area.

Module Name: KERNEL32.DLL
Description: Win32 Kernel core component
Version: 4.90.3000
Product: Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Millennium Operating System
Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation

Application Name: Helpctr.exe
Description: Microsoft Help Center
Version: 4.90.0.2525
Product: Microsoft (r) PCHealth
Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation

--------------------
If the Taskbar is behaving strangely, try exiting Multimedia
background task support module.

Module Name: mmtask.tsk
Description: Multimedia background task support module
Version: 4.90.3000
Product: Microsoft Windows
Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation

Hope this helps you help me. <g>  If not, could you give me
some guidance as to what other "pertinent parts" I can
provide?

Thanks for your help.

Job, your post is excellent, and I am as confused about your problem as you
are.
Try the several suggestions here:
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/HSfails.htm

I suspect the problem lies not with winmgmt.exe, but some other part of Help
& Support.

Thanks for your feedback Jack.

I will stumble through the other suggestions.
