registry key recovery

When finished following some instructions to remove adware from my registry,
I now have problems with windows explorer.  I get %THISDIRNAME% shown in the
window and the various frames within the window are no longer controlled
properly.

I may have removed a key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT>PROTOCOLS>Filter

called text/htmlview  or something similar.  Is there a way to recover just
this key from scanreg backups?   Is there another solution to this?

If I need to reload the entire registry prior to my messing with it do I
need to start up in safe mode and how do I do this?
Thanks!

Didn't you export the key before deleting?
If you mean this key, then there is nothing much in it:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/webviewhtml
It is the same on my Win ME computer as the Win98 one I am using now.

Yes, you can recover it from the backup.
Here is some software that will read old Registry files:

Regdat - Browse old Win95/Win98/Me Registry Files.
http://people.freenet.de/h.ulbrich
http://people.freenet.de/h.ulbrich/regdat.zip
http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?500000023756

RegExport is a basic version of Regdat designed for users who want to
occasionally export information from old Win9x/WinMe registry files.
Registration rate is US $8.
http://people.freenet.de/h.ulbrich
http://people.freenet.de/h.ulbrich/regexp.zip

If it is only the key above, then this will put it back: (others may
verify it)

Make up a file from the lines below. Copy into a file called fix.reg
which should be created in Notepad. Do not retype, copy in case of
errors. The 1st line in the file is  the line REGEDIT4
Make sure your mail or news reader does not add any spaces to the end
of a line.
The last line must be blank.
Doubleclick fix.reg

-----copy below this line fix.reg------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/webviewhtml]
@="WebView MIME Filter"
"CLSID"="{733AC4CB-F1A4-11d0-B951-00A0C90312E1}"

---- end file above here

Thank Noel. It seems pretty standard but I wonder if it is really the
problem....

Under the circumstances, perhaps a simple System Restore or even scanreg
/restore might be an easier option and then re-tackle the adware issue.

Thanks for all the help!  For scanreg /restore do I need to be in DOS or
safe mode or can I run it in the command window from ME and then just
restart?

You can run it in any of the three modes - but I prefer to run it in Real
Mode DOS (using the WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk). Just a personal thing <g>

You don't need to set a path, just type scanreg /restore at the A:\> prompt
and then press Return. Follow the screen prompts. - Good luck.

Everything is back in order after scanreg /restore.  Thanks again!

To summarize, I was following the information on

http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/grayware/graywareDetails.asp?SNAME=ADW_HYPLINKER.A

to remove the adware Xhrmy.exe from my pc.  Ad-Aware SE did not get this one
even with the VX2 Cleaner add-on.  I was having no luck deleting the file
since it was in use.  But process would not show up in the Win ME list of
processes via Ctrl-Alt Del so couldn't kill process in order to be able to
delete file.   Out of the list of registry keys to delete on the above web
page, I removed the Xhrmy specific ones and I had one or two of the others.
It was in step 27 and 28 where I got careless and deleted

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/webviewhtml

instead of

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html

as called for on the page.  The only application that seemed to be affected
on my PC (Dell Dimension 4100) was Windows Explorer with the problem(s) I
mentioned in original post.  Thanks again.

You're welcome TJT, - good to know that you've resolved it. Thanks for the
feedback.

Hi sorry to butt in, but I also have to run that
scanreg/fix and windows   says to do it from the command
prompt.  I can't figure out how to get to the cmd prompt.
I have to start in safe mode and when I go to run and type
in cmd it won't let me go there.  I do not have a ME
floppy start up disk.  Do I need one?  If so, where do I
get it?  Thanks.

OK jennifer, - in reverse order.

> .. I do not have a ME floppy start up disk.
> Do I need one?  If so, where do I get it?

No, you don't NEED one, but it is certainly advisable to have one.

Either make your own:-
"How to Create a Startup Disk in Windows Me"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;267287

or go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and download the WinMe OEM
option to your hard disk. Run it from your hard disk - with a fresh floppy
disk in your A: drive - to create a WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk.

Then using your newly made WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk (whichever method you
chose), run scanreg /restore or (scanreg /fix - and note the space between g
and /) as outlined in my response to TJT.

> I can't figure out how to get to the cmd prompt.

Start | Programs | Accessories  -  Command Prompt (C:\ icon)
(Don't forget - scanreg /fix - and note the space between g and /)

> ... I also have to run that
> scanreg/fix and (in?) windows

Start | Run | - Type "scanreg /fix" (no quotes and note the space between g
and /) in the 'Open' box then click OK.

HTH and good luck.
