Am currently working on an ME computer that has 2 main
problems, not sure if problems are related. First, system
tools folder has been removed or deleted, so cannot
access any of it's normal functions. Any ideas on how to
restore? Second, when accessing windows update site, as
soon as you select "scan for updates" the site appears to
lock up, and nothing happens. Online to any other sites
seems fine. Any help on these issues would be greatly
appreciated. Thank You.   Bob.

Bob,

First check that the System Tools folder hasn't been moved and isn't now
sitting in another nearby folder.

Secondly remember that the System Tools folder simply contains shortcuts
to applications rather than the application concerned so all that it
necessary, if you cannot find the folder, is to create another and then
populate it with new shortcuts to the various applications concerned.
I've listed below the various entries and the targets for the shortcuts.

The System Tools folder woulds have included shortcuts to ...
Character Map - C:\Windows\Charmap.exe
Clipboard Viewer - C:\Windows\Clipbrd.exe
Disk Cleanup - C:\Windows\Cleanmgr.exe
Disk Defragmenter - C:\Windows\Defrag.exe
Maintenance Wizard - C:\Windows\Tuneup.exe
Resource Meter - C:\Windows\Rscrmtr.exe
ScanDisk - C:\Windows\Scandskw.exe
Scheduled Tasks - C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

System Information - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\MSInfo\MSInfo32.exe
System Monitor - C:\Windows\Sysmon.exe
System Restore - C:\Windows\\System\Restore\Rstrui.exe

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your help on the system tools problem, and
your timely response. Any ideas why windows update will
not work on this computer? No problems on other websites,
only when trying to get the latest windows updates. Have
checked IE settings, don't see anything out of whack. No
firewall or pop-up blockers installed either. Thanks
Again!  Bob.

Bob,

Sorry but without knowing the actual problems you are experiencing such as
the error codes and the like I can't really help.  A good place to start
if having problems with the Windows Update site is the Windows Update
Trouble-shooter (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/).

Next time you access the WU site and have a problem make a note of the
error and either post back here or alternatively to the Windows Update
newsgroup (microsoft.public.windowsupdate).

Mike,

I know this will probably sound strange, but there
haven't been any error messages at all. Click the "scan
for updates" link and it just simply stops. IE activity
icon also just stops. No lockup, no action, just nobody
home. Close page, try again- same results. Other pages at
MS load fine, same elsewheres. Thanks for your suggestion
to post this problem to a different group. Just thought
I'd send you a follow up. Have a great day.    Bob.

Bob,

Did you check the link I posted?

For example it includes:
The Scan function hangs at 0% with two solutions offered a) To install the
latest 5.6 scripting engine which can be downloaded from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp,
and, b) To repair Internet Explorer.
Further down the page you will also find
Scan for updates freezes or stops at 0% with some further possible
solutions.

Best of luck in establishing and solving the problem.

Bob, I had a similar problem about 1½ years ago, would hang at zero and some
time later would always report no new updates available. Since I never found
an answer my best guess at cause was something to do with an xml update or
install.
Look in C:\Windows folder for file Windows Update.log for clues. My machine
has a C:\Temp\WU folder where (some of?) the update program info is kept.
I assume you have rectified the missing system tools folder issue, mine is
located at C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools.
