ScanDefrag

Hi All Good Folks

Having seen several recommendations for ScanDefrag, I installed v5.1 and
came up with a couple of problems.

After setting to RESTRICTED mode, after a reboot, I suffered the BSOD and a
number of different FATAL ERROR windows. These continued to loop round and
the only way to get out was to be brutal and switch off.

According to SD Tech Support the dreaded KB89711 is the culprit for this.
After disabling this in msconfig, the RESTRICTED option worked after a
fashion; seemingly everything loaded and the only way to get ScanDisc to get
past "6 bars" was to Enditall and stop all internet activity in ZoneAlarm.
Which was what I was doing before with MS Maintenance wizard which rather
defeats the objectives of SD.

Does anyone have any comments; and is there any way to get Defrag to bypass
the "Checking disc for errors" and go straight into "Reading disc info"
after I have just Scandisc-ed through either Maint Wiz or SD. The "Check
disc for errors" box is unchecked and "Every time I defrag" boxes is
checked.

I will continue conversations with SD TS and report any enlightening
feedback

Regards to all out there

Until/whilst the KB89711 issue is (being) resolved, why not run scandisk
and/or defrag in Safe Mode, or even run scandisk in Real Mode DOS?

At least you won't suffer from any internet activity - you won't be able to
connect <g>

Thanks for your suggestion Mart. Only problem with booting to safe mode is
that it boots to a different screen size/resolution and b***s up my
desktop's icons arrangements which then takes me time to rearrange. So I'd
rather not boot to safe mode. Will try DOS mode and report back.

As regards the Safe Mode desktop icon scrambler (I think it's a feature) the
icons can be reset to your liking with Iconoid, obtained from (I kid you
not):

http://www.sillysot.com/

Read the directions carefully.  If followed precisely this app works like a
charm.  There are other features associated with Iconoid that you may not
particularly like (changing colors, disappearing icons and system tray) but
these can be disabled.

To reset your icons, immediately before you boot to Safe Mode, in Start/Run,
type - without the quotes - "SCANREG". Say yes to backing the registry up
again.

Then after being in Safe Mode, in Start/Run, type - without the quotes -
"SCANREG /RESTORE". You don't need to choose which backup to restore from as
the one you just made will be the one highlighted.

That'll put the icons back - after rebooting - to where they were but won't
change anything else since you haven't made any other registry changes since
the backup.

That's neat Shane. Sometimes the most obvious solutions are the hardest to
see <g>

But whether its more or less work than re-jigging the desktop's icons, only
Delboy can decide.

Yeah, it took me long enough. Apropos your next point, it took me long
enough because I don't have many icons on my desktops. But when you work on
someones who has a couple of dozen, grouped............I mean, some people
are too challenged to use the Start/Programs menu, you know? Jeez!

Hallo,
What i do after having the same problems as you reported is:
-shutdown ZA (via the right mouse buttom)
-any virusscanner disabling the auto-protect
-of course no internet connection
-disabling the screensaver to "no"
-no stand-by timer neither sleep function.

I had other problems with the KB-patch...

A lot of disabling work but scandisk is now successfull already for several
years.

success

Delboy, I agree that defrag checking disk for errors seems redundant after a
scandisk however; it is possible that defrag checks for different errors than
scandisk so I tolerate it. As for bsod and other errors, setting restrictive
mode and restart machine is supposed to restrict running processes and
applications to the absolute minimum. Open the log file and it should show
what was running and which, if any processes were terminated. By any chance,
have you replaced scandisk with norton speed disk ?

Hi All Good Folks out there

Thanks for all your feedbacks (feedsback?) and suggestions. It seems that
KB891711 has to take the blame once more for some of the problems although
apart from this I have had no problems with KB891711 (whatever it's supposed
to do).

Shane's solution to the desktop changes is neat, I will write that one down
in my little black book.  Yes I do have quite a lot of desktop icons, but
would suggest that one of the main purposes of the desktop is to put
shortcuts there; otherwise why have anything on your desktop at all? Still
everybody to their own preferences.

To TheReal Fastlane, perfectly valid point about scandisk and defrag error
checking, although I do recall once only seeing defrag stopping and a
message saying "there are errors on your disk, run scandisk" or words to
that effect, whatever that might prove or disprove. But this was so long ago
that I can't remember the circumstances. It might even have been on Win95.
No I do not have any Norton apps. Being a tightwad, all my software came
bundled, as giveaways or freeware.

After taking in everybody's comments and suggestions, I have come to the
conclusion that any advantages ScanDefrag will give will only be marginal. I
will either clean up at the end of a session by Enditall,  Stop all internet
activity via ZoneAlarm, and clean up with the maintenance wizard; then pour
myself a stiff whisky (or 2) and relax for 5 or 10 whilst they run and then
shut down or go the scanreg, safe mode,  maintenance wizard and restore
depending on how I feel.

Anyway thanks again for all your advice and comments.

A most comprehensive pieces of feedsbacks <g>

Cheers Delboy and good luck
