When I try to access system restore from assessories/systemtools...I
get a message from IE saying "script error", and it gives a line no as 14,
char 9, and another message saying "Object does not support this property or
method",  and then it says "code 0" giving a URL of
"res://rstrui.exe/start.htm". The result of all this is that I cannot use
restore at all. I have tried ensuring that IE script checking(?!) is turned
off, but that makes no difference.

My apologies for the delayed reply but have been busy elsewhere.

This error is normally an indication that the state manager's
configuration files are damaged and that you need to reset system restore.

From a command prompt such as Start | Run, enter the following:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Restore\rstrui.exe  /makefirstrestorepoint
This should hopefully fix the error and kick start System Restore.

See MS KB 296090 - "Error Message When You Start System Restore: An Error
Occurred in the Script on This Page"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=296090) for details of how to fix this
problem.
