Upgrading WinME to XP - yay? nay?

Hi, All,

I'm wondering what levels of success folks have had in upgrading from
Windows ME to XP.  I'm tired of a lot of the hassles I'm having with WinME,
and from what I've read, most, if not all, of these will be eliminated under
XP.

However, since I'm upgrading I don't want to create more hassles than I
already have as a result of the upgrade process.

Suggestions?  Can folks point me to some webstuff to read on the upgrade
process -- and aftermath?

I realize a few of the programs I have won't work under ME and I'll have to
purchase new versions (or upgrades if available); these aren't the hassles
I'm worried about.  It's the system configuration and other such Windows
hassles that scare me.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers,
- marty

Upgrading from Windows Me to Windows XP can go very well.  During the
beta testing for the original release of Windows XP I installed each
new beta release as an upgrade, using a copy of my WindowsMe partition
as the basis.  They generally worked out very well, except for
problems with the beta software itself, but finding those problems are
what beta testing is all about.

Anyway, plan your upgrade in advance and make sure you have a backup
available of your critical data files.  What I suggest you do, before
you install the upgrade, is to run the Files and Settings Transfer
Wizard from the Windows XP CD and save the data file it creates to
another hard drive partition, a network drive, or a removable backup
device such as a CD or DVD writer.  That way if things do go blooey
you can still do a clean install of XP and recover your files.

Marty,

Win Me can be upgraded to XP but does depend on your hardware, software
and
needs.  I have done this many times and have never had any problems but
not everyone has been as successful.  However subject to your hardware and
software being suitable for use with XP and your being willing to pay for
the XP upgrade then yes, XP is an excellent operating system and there is
no reason why you should not upgrade.  Note however that upgrading won't
remove any of your installed programs although the Upgrade Advisor (see
below) may well inform you that some will need to be removed before
upgrading.

The XP Upgrade Advisor (UpgAdv.exe) can be downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp but
note that this is a large program being around 32MB is size.  If you only
have a dial-up connection it might be worth looking for a magazine that
has included the Upgrade Advisor on their cover CD. The advisor will give
you a clue as to any XP drivers required that aren't on the XP CD and
programs for which you will have to obtain updates.  Some applications
will have to be uninstalled prior to upgrading after which they can often
be reinstalled although in some cases the application will first have to
be upgraded to an XP compatible version.  The Upgrade Advisor is also
included on the XP CD.

For a more extensive discussion of upgrading see Gary Woodruff's article
at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

Out of curiosity exactly what hassles have you been having with Win Me?
Depending on those details it is possible your PC has problems that need
fixing regardless of the operating system you are using.

Well, a few weeks ago I posted about problems with system resources (which I
believe you were instrumental in helping me resolve), but I have a lot of
other hassles too.  For example, I have an Iomega zip drive attached.
During the boot process, when the system goes to check the zip drive, it
sometimes freezes and I have to do a hard shutdown; sometimes when I'm
scanning pages with Scansoft, as soon as I click the "Scan" button
everything freezes and I have to do a hard shutdown; I'll install upgrades
to various products, from Windows to Norton, and after the upgrade is
complete and I get the message that my system needs to be restarted, I'll
click yes and end up with the dreaded blue screen.  I'm not saying this
happens every day, but a few times a week isn't unreasonable.  Yesterday, I
discovered that my entire Norton antivirus system was corrupted, and also my
printer couldn't be recognized.  I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton A-V
and that worked fine.  However, I could neither uninstall or reinstall the
printer from the manufacturer's disc.  I kept getting an error about unable
to load a dll file that wasn't even on the disc.  I ended up restoring my
registry to like three days back, and then  was able to reinstall the
printer.  Just crap like that, that takes away my time (this last couple of
hassles was a few hours to resolve) and drives me crazy.

Enough whining . . .

Marty,

That you have chosen to use Norton on Win Me could well be the cause for
some if not all of your problems.  Unfortunately few Norton products play
well with Win Me and to be frank with any other operating system either
including XP but they are known vectors for too many problems on Win Me
for me to list here.

Interestingly all the problems you mention, detection of your zip drive,
scanning with Scansoft and printing involve communicating with external
hardware attached to your PC.  Are these all usb or are they a mixture of
usb and parallel port connections or, and I hope note, all daisy chained
to your parallel port?  If daisy chained then that could well be the
reason for the communication problems.

Hi, Mike,

I have two printers -- one USB (this is the one that I had the problems
with) that's connected direct to a PC port; and one parallel that's daisy
chained to the scanner.  I tried connecting the parellel printer direct, but
it never worked -- as soon as I plugged it into the slot in the back of the
scanner, which *is* connected directly, both worked fine -- and have for
years and years.  I believe the scanner prob is directly related to the
pissy Scansoft software.  The zip drive is USB and connects directly to a PC
port.
