BTW, I do NOT have MSN messenger running 'automatically', just start it
up as required.

I discovered this problem with MSN Messenger 7.0.0813. But it could well be
the same with the version you are using.
Keep in mind that when you use MSN Messenger as you do and then close it
and sign/or sign out, the program likely keeps running in the background
even after you go offline --as you might well see by that icon in the system
tray with some sort of x on it. It continues as an active process even whn
you're signed ou and logged off.. I have no idea why its set up that
way.... In my own expereince, this continues to prevent regular system
checkpoints until you right click on that icon and click on : "Exit". After
I did this a couple of times, it became second nature. Result: Two system
checkpoints daily for over a week now....But.I forgot to hit "Exit " once,
and no new chechpoints were generated for a day.
Good luck with this:

I right click that system tray icon and close down Messenger completely.
I have always done it that way, I don't want anything 'running' when not
required. Have confirmed all processes terminated with SysInternals
Process Explorer.

Today I have just disabled and then re-enabled system restore and an auto
restore point was created on reboot. Hopefully this will be all I need to
corect the situation. I will NOT even use Messenger until the next
restore point is created tomorrow, then I will see what happens after
that.
