I set my volume button on mute one day and now that I want to turn it back on
the icon is gone.  I have tried to go into the control panel to turn it on
that way, nut nothing seems to solve the problem.  I need help

Well, I had no trouble.  From Control Panel choose "Sounds and Multimedia."
From "Sound" tab check "Show volume control on the taskbar."  (You can
adjust the volume here also.)  Click OK your way out.

Second thoughts:  Were you adjusting the volume control from the Microsoft
"Windows Media Player" perhaps?

Are you opening "Sounds and Multimedia" from the Control Panel?  At the
bottom of the Sounds tab under Sound Volume is a checkbox to select
"Show volume control on the taskbar."

I see what you are talking about and there is a check in the check box,
although the "show volume control on the taskbar is not highlighted.......

What do you mean it's "not highlighted?"

I mean I can't click on the box that has a check mark already in it.

If you have a dial-up modem, you may need to re-install your modem drivers.

Hi, Shane,

What's the connection?  I was thinking possibly a registry key was
inadvertently removed or the sound card drivers need to be reinstalled.

More to the point, do you have a sound card, or on-board sound?

As for DSL, has it - on this machine - always been DSL, or did it start out
with 56k dial-up?

I've never gone into the exact detail, but the Serial Wave Device drivers
appear to provide a degree of Sounds and Multimedia support (where on-board
sound is concerned. If the OP has a sound card this is no doubt irrelevent).
I have, with 56k SM and AC97, experienced the symptoms a couple of times,
and re-installing the modem drivers was the cure.

Live and learn.  I'll have to file this one.  :)

Indeed, the SWD is one of the choices for what to play sounds with, in
Sounds and Multimedia. Also poss. in DXdiag. I'm not sure if this is
specific to Speakerphone softmodems, as I've never had any other type. iirc
it isn't required in XP as it already has the requisite drivers.

None of which is to say that your suspicion was incorrect, of course!
