Microsoft ME slowdown

Everything I write is about my ME computer. My computer has slowed to a
crawl. I recovered the hard drrive, put on protections. Won't speed up to do
anything. Try to play Pogo games and it won't let me in most. This started
over 6 months ago. I had previously played these games. I installed a
firewall on the ME when I got a new computer, wouldn't let me in anything.
Took firewall off, still problems. I have over 75% memory available. I have
frequent freezes and lock-ups. I keep thinking it's pop-ups trying to come
in. I rarely see any.
I hope someone has a solution.

You may already have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system.

I ran all the scans, a mess.
I don't see a prompt in the start-up that will let me open in safe mode.
sStinger had a lot of items.
Shredder stayed on for 3 days then said everything gone. ???
Nothing in adaware or spy sweeper

Faster, but not up to speed, yet.
Thank you

You MUST get to Safe Mode!!

To nick Mart's post.....

"Essentially - How to boot into Safe Mode :-

There is an 'Official' (documented) MS method for WinMe - as per a search
for 'safe mode' in Help and
Support Centre will find - by holding down or 'stabbing at' the Ctrl or the
F8 keys as the computer starts to boot (i.e - at switch-on)

A further couple of 'Unofficial' methods are by using the Shift key as
above, or when your machine is running in Normal Mode, run msconfig.exe and
on the General tab, select Advanced and check the 'Enable Startup Menu' box.
(Not forgetting to disable it when you've finished <g>)

Good luck, but FYI - "Description of the Safe Mode Troubleshooter"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;274155

or more detailed - "How to Troubleshoot Windows Millennium Edition Startup
Problems"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;273738"

I got into "safe mode". Thank you. Ran everything again. Nothing found. No
change in speed, but now computer ramdomly reboots with no warning, windows
protection stopped working and system shut down,  I had to shut off power to
turn computer off. I think this one has had it. Something has taken control
that can hide from the scans.
Thank you for all of your help.

This does look to me as if you may have a hardware failure (probably the
fans) - if you're not reasonably competent with electronics, your best bet
is to take it to your local techie (NOT bestbuy/PCWorld/whatever - the local
'know-it-all') and ask him to have a look - make sure that you describe your
symptoms first!!

Following on from Noel's conclusions (with which I would concur) - and
whilst you are waiting to arrange for an inspection by your "local techie" -
you may wish to do a little further testing for yourself to try and localise
it further. Armed with your results, it might just help to assure your
"local techie" that he can't pull the wool over your eyes <g>

> "computer ramdomly reboots with no warning,"

Boot using your Windows Startup (floppy) Disk and select Option 1 (or let it
continue to 'time-out' to) the DOS Help page. Scroll up and down the Help
pages every now and again. Leave it running for several hours and see if it
still 'randomly reboots'.

If so, then it's a problem with your PC and not with WinMe (nor your Hard
Disk!!).

Good luck

Mart

I haven't forgotten any of you.
Been working on computer slowly. Had to recover hard drive and start over.
Installed new protections.
Nothing helps. The speed I had before will never come back.
I thank you all for all your help.
I see a new computer in my future.

We need some additional information about your computer.

- What is the make and model?
- What type of CPU does it have and what speed does it run at?
- How much RAM does your computer have?

Available memory is rarely if ever reported as a percentage so I
assume that your comment about "over 75% memory available" is really a
reference to the value of free system resources which does not relate
directly to RAM usage.  The 75% value indicates that your machine is
fairly lightly loaded and should perform quite well.

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab.  Make a list of
all the items that shown there (just the names in the first column)
and post that information back here together with the items I asked
about at the beginning.  That will help us to determine what might be
affecting your machine.

Good luck

'Nuf Sed!

You have Norton installed!!!!
(at this point I shall refrain from saying more on the subject of
Norton/Symantec software, except to mention than IMNHO, it is best used
anywhere else than on a computer)

Norton Antivirus is basically incompatible with WindowsMe and you need
to give serious consideration to replacing it with a different
product.

The following antivirus products are ones that do not have specific
compatibility issues with WindowsMe, at least insofar as I am aware.
There may be others:

AVG (free) http://www,grisoft.com
Avast (free) http://www.avast.com
eTrust http://www.my-etrust.com
PC-cillin http://www.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com

If there are still problems after uninstalling Norton then post a
further response back here.   Note that Norton is so shoddily
programmed that you will likely have to make use of a secondary
uninstaller (available from the Symantec/Norton website) in order to
fully clean it off your system.

Good luck

Hi Ron......

I would like to add the "free" (trial) version link for EZ Trust.....I am
presently using that one myself.  It is for one year.

No....dammit!!  I will go over and see Willy tomorrow.  Seems the Pogo techs
are saying that it isn't their fault, but that people should try either an
older version of Sun Java or the "really old" MS Java.....and that people
who have Audigy cards are having problems and that is not "their
problem"......bwa ha ha.  Pass it on to everyone else, why doncha!  I don't
have Audigy.....ATI SoundMax, I believe.

Just had the new furnace installed today......am going out tomorrow with a
tin cup and a sign begging for money.....ROFL!!

Oops!!  I usually manage to screw the names up re audio and video...this
time I combined them.  ATI Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis for video and
SoundMax for audio.  Updated the drivers on anything that needed it, but
leaving the Asus motherboard alone, grin.  (getting brave in my old age)

Oh so very brave indeed!  I can well remember when you were loath to
update a driver for fear of what might happen.  Trouble was, for you it
often did.  :-)

(I haven't stripped in public recently - that I remember, anyway!!<g>)

New things are coming - and hopefully a new site altogether, if I can sort
out a few technical things (like cash, etc<g>)

Intention is to move/mirror the technical stuff to a more 'tech-friendly'
host, and leave the 'personal' stuff there for the moment - and expand the
techie stuff on the new site considerably, in my spare time.
