Having an issue with a Dell 900mhz running WINME. Have tried to cure a
problem with IE to no avail after using several Internet suggested
anti-virus/antispyware tools. Finally decided to just do a restore back to a
point before problem. For some reason on this machine it only shows 5-6
restore points within the last six weeks. This is considering this system
only has about 25% of the 20GB HD used. Then when you do a restore it comes
back really quickly and then says that it couldn't restore to that point and
no changes were made. Also tried it in Safe Mode with same result. Any ideas
on how to do System Restore on this machine and why so little is allowed to
restore points?

It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch -
without
which any current restore points are just space fillers.
To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on
the
file, and select Properties.
What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed
the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem
if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch.
To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and
download
the patch for offline install
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q290700
Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same
time,
clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and
creating a single new one.
You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the
adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard
Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most
purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as
Office.

Joan,
Just to clarify. I checked the ME version and it is 4.90.3000 which is
neither of the numbers you mentioned but close to one. Does this mean I have
the patch?
Also, my daughters computer which is running WINXP has the same problem with
Restore not working. Is there a corresponding patch for XP? I find it hard
to believe that Restore is a function of both operating systems and works in
neither without a patch.
Thanks for you help on this

You were looking at the wrong file!!
Open Windows Explorer, and hit F3 - (or use Start|Search|For Files and
FOlders)
in 'Search for Files or folders named:', enter the filename 'SMGR.DLL' -
click OK
When the file is found - there may be three or four instances of it - check
the one listed as being in the C:\Windows\System folder.
(Right-click on its icon, and select Properties from the drop-down list)
What is the version number??

Glad to help - one problem down and one to go.....<g>
you may want to post your original problem to the group in a new post
(appropriately headed) so that we can help with that.
Good Luck!

Noel,
My original problem was solved when I found out the Registry entries for
Dial-Up Networking had been corrupted. After rebuilding them, the IE problem
went away,(still don't know the cause, but don't care that much now that it
is working).
Thanks again for all your help.
