System Restore + Active X disabled + Windows update - Problems all at once?

I used Windows update about 2 weeks ago and updated Internet Explorer (Ver
6.0.2800.1106 Update Ver. Q896688) - No problems. I sell a few things on
e-bay from time to time and started to list another item. When I got to the
picture upload page the enhanced picture program (Active X Control) was not
there. In short I cannot download any Active X controls, not just e-bay but
any Active X controls. I have not changed any security settings. I rechecked
my security settings and they are still set up to accept Active X. Thinking
it might be the last IE6 update I went to system Restore to reset my
computer back to before the update. Blow me down I got this Error message;-
Title "Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page
Line: 14
Char: 9
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method
Code: 0
URL: res://rstrui.exe/start.htm
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

There are Yes / No buttons

This is a small window on my desktop
So thinking I should see if I can Update my system again I went to WindowME
update page. After it had loaded correctly and just before scanning a
message came up to say "Administrators Only"
I also have run "scanreg /fix" and attempted to repair IE6

My computer is a stand alone machine. To my knowledge I have not changed
anything
O/s: WindowsME
Ram: 512mB
Disc 45gB (35gB free)
Processor: 1gB
Broad Band connection

Sorry this is long winded and I hope I have given you enough info to help

Two possible fixes, I'm not sure which applies in your case.  Both
apparently a side effect of installing the 896688 patch.

See:
KB909889 - "ActiveX controls may not load as expected in Internet Explorer
due to defense in depth changes introduced in cumulative security update
896688" (http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=909889), and,
KB909738 - "A Web page that contains a custom ActiveX control may not load
as expected in Internet Explorer due to defense in depth changes
introduced in cumulative security update 896688"

Hello Mike
Thank you for your reply. I have just tried both with no success. With the
first link I had to change the first line from Windows Registry Editor
Version 5.00 to Regedit4. Before I did this I got an error message saying
that the entry was not a registry entry. I restarted my computer after this
but still will not accept Active X controls.
With the second link I have tried Set the ActiveX compatibility value in the
registry and again ,after restarting my computer, no luck.
I guess there is no way to remove the Q896688 update?
I'm going to bed now so I will check back tomorrow night.

You should be able to uninstall the KB896688 using the "Internet Explorer
Q896688" entry in Add/Remove Programs.  Note though that if you do this
you will have restored Internet Explorer's vulnerability to certain
exploits.

Hello Mike
I got home early today and went through the links you gave me again as I was
very tired last night just in case I had made a mistake. Again no change. In
desperation I re-installed WindowsME over itself which gave me IE5.5. I went
to Windows update and updated all updates after several restarts. I did not
install KB896688. All the items that did not work do work now. I have just
read your post, I should have been more patient. I did not realise that you
can uninstall these updates via Add/Remove Programs. BTW I have installed
the System Restore Patch 290700usam.exe
Thank you for your help. I appreciate I am at some risk. Is this problem
something that Microsoft will fix, if in fact, it is a bug?

Best Regards
Grim

Oh Dear!  Reinstalling Win Me over itself without first uninstalling IE6
is going to have had the result of leaving Internet Explorer in an unknown
and virtually totally trashed state due to it now having a mix of IE5.5
and IE6 version files.  It seems though from your post that you might have
been extremely lucky and got away with it in which case great sighs of
relief all round. :-)

If however you find that your start to experience problems with IE you
might want to consider ripping out IE by the roots and then reinstalling
IE6.  Noel Paton has advice on how to do this on his site
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm

Best of luck,

Sorry Mike / Noel
Yes I did gentlemen. I ran a program called IEradicator as I had a problem
with IE a long time ago and this program removed it. I have been to Noel's
web site (very helpful) but did  not do  all he suggested last night. All
the faults seem to be OK now so I am reluctant to do anymore. Thanks to both
of you again for your concerns and help. System Restore is creating restore
points if the computer is left idle for some time. I have AVG 7 + Adaware +
SpywareBlaster + The Cleaner + Zone Alarm. All are checked for updates
daily.
Again I ask is this  KB896688 problem something that Microsoft will fix, if
in fact, it is a bug?

You do need to complete the reinstallation by doing the updates and repairs
I suggest.

By all means, leave the  896688 patch until last - then create a manual
restore point prior to installation of that patch. That way, even if an
uninstall fails (should it be needed), you will have a way of returning the
system to the functional state.

Good Luck

I really think you should install the 8966688 hotfix.  If you do find you
have problems (I have experienced none here on Win Me with IE6 SP1 and
896688) you then have the choice of either uninstalling it using the entry
it places in Add/Remove Programs or if that fails for some reason using
the system restore checkpoint it creates before it installs itself.
Without this patch you are wide open when on the net to your system being
seriously compromised if you chance to visit a rogue web site.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mike in this  - despite a small hiccup in my
personal experience of an 896688 update in WinXP!

Gentlemen
Right or wrong I believe that this patch will knock out my System Restore if
I install it just like it did before. If it will not uninstall via
Add/Remove Programs I am back to the original problem.  I do accept your
concerns. Maybe one day when I'm feeling lucky and have more time I will
have a go but right now I need this computer to work.
Thank you both once again

Let me say this slowly.  Installing the 896688 patch will have no, that is
no, effect on system restore.  Why is it that you think otherwise?  The
patch has nothing to do with any of the files involved in system restore.
System Restore does not use ActiveX nor Internet Explorer.

Why do you think that the patch will not uninstall using Add/Remove
programs since from your posts it is clear that you have never tried this?

System Restore was almost certainly dead and buried long before you
installed the patch last time - it was simply the installation that brought
it to light.

Your choice - but you are insecure until you reinstall the patch.

I will answer both of you with this post if I may
There are a lot of people that use computers and to not think or try and
logically sort out what might have happened. I am one of these people.
Noel you must be right about my system restore not working before the 896688
update because I have not used it or checked to see if it was creating
restore points for a very long time. The reason I thought (wrongly) that
this patch had caused  my system restore to fail was because when I tried to
use it a warning message came up referring to an Internet Explorer Script
Error. The page that should have loaded the Active X control commented that
my security settings in Internet Explorer were not allowing my computer to
download the control. Mike that is why I made the wrong assumption. I
related the warning (Internet Explorer Script Error) I have a minimal amount
of software on this computer and don't visit Add / Remove Programs very
often. I thought that once these updates were installed they could not be
removed. I'm sorry I was wrong to assume that.
Is there any connection with this 896688 update and the fact that I could
not access Windows update site or the fact that I could not use Active X
controls? I really would like an answer to that because if you guys say that
it was not my problem I will install this patch. If I do install the patch
after your reply and get a problem with both the afore mentioned problems
would I be right in thinking it was the patch?

Best Regards

Loop back to your original post and my reply to that post.  In my case I
have had no problems with Active-X controls and 896688 on Win Me or any
other system.  It appears that your system, at least last time round, is
one of those affected.  If you have since reinstalled Win Me I feel the
best check would be to try for yourself.  If 896688 again causes you
problems you know how to remove the patch.

Best of luck,

Hello Mike
I have installed the patch!!! All the problems that appeared last time have
not reappeared again [:-)). Thank you so much and Noel. I am now up to date
with security patches. I am not going to ask why it did not work last time
and this time it did. The answer would be tooooooooooooo much for me to deal
with.
Thank you once again

That's good news to read.

I prefer to be asked questions I can answer so on this occasion I'm glad
you didn't ask the question. <vbg>

If you find the odd problem with ActiveX in future hopefully you'll find
that either KB909889 or KB909738 hold the answer.

Cheers - best of luck for the future.
