How to run ScanDisk - in DOS or inside Windows Me (keeps halting)

GerryP777 - 24 Nov 2005 17:41 GMT
A friend with Me had an error during defrag saying she should run ScanDisk.
They had a power cut so I never saw the original state or message.  I wanted
to run ScanDisk in DOS but don't know how to break in during the Me boot (it
doesn't seem to be F8 like in XP) - how do I get an Me machine to stop at DOS
?
Meanwhile, I ran ScanDisk in a DOS window from inside Me but it keeps
halting with a message something like "I had 10 retries - do you want to
continue getting these messages?". I've advised her to keep saying Yes but it
seems a daft message:
 (1) 10 retries at what ?  just some particular blocks or the whole process ?
 (2)  if we answer No, presumably the *scandisk* continues but just without
those messages, yes ?
 (3)  Or, is there a way of saying don't ask me again ?

Main Q again is: How do I get an Me machine to stop at DOS during booting so
I can run ScanDisk in there?
Is ScanDisk in c:\windows for Me ?

Sorry so many Q's.  Thanks for any help.      bw, Gerry :o)
Heather - 24 Nov 2005 18:00 GMT
Do you mean run it in Safe Mode??  If so, hold down (or tap) the "Ctrl* key
while the computer is rebooting....that will get you there.

Scandisk gives that message out after 10 stops and restarts.

Hi Heather,  thanks, but, um, ...

With recent XP pc's I've worked on, you can interrupt the boot and choose
either DOS or XP-Safe mode or full XP.  Do you not get that with Me ?  Can
you not boot into DOS mode to run low level diagnostics etc. before all the
Windows bumpf starts up ?
I'm concerned that, even in Safe Mode, there will be windows processes
running that might interfere with ScanDisk - is that not so ?
Does ScanDisk restart from the beginning ?   Or does it just mean it's
re-attempting certain blocks/sectors/... ?   The numeric counter seemed to
continue incrementing after the message.

Thanks for any more info ?    bw,  Gerry :o)

Hi Gerry Um.....grin.

I am using XP now and trying to remember.  But I used Safe Mode to defrag
and scandisk often....never went into DOS and don't believe it is all that
easy.  If it even is accessible.  My memory fails me.

Windows is not running in Safe Mode.....no drivers, etc.  About as basic as
you can get.  Are you running the standard Scandisk or the hugely
time-consuming full one?

(note to self....turn on WinME and shake the cobwebs out, grin)

One of the gurus on here should be able to sort you out in the morning.  But
perhaps you should post this to WinME General and that will get you your
answers.

Cheers.....Heather

Gerry, in WinMe, you can run Scandisk (and Defrag) in Safe Mode (Tap F8 or
Ctrl keys at boot-up to get into Safe Mode) or you can even run Scandisk in
Real Mode DOS (N.B Defrag will NOT run in DOS)

To run Scandisk in Real Mode DOS, boot, using the WinMe Startup (floppy)
Disk and select 'With CD-ROM Support', then at the A:\> prompt, type
"scandisk c:" (no quotes and note the colon) and then press Return.

Follow the screen prompts - and for the first time at least, (unless you are
happy that either the disk is OK, or you can sacrifice your data - see next
paragraph) tell it NOT to do a Surface Scan. See what it reports and keep a
check on its progress.

If it reports major problems, copy your important data to another drive (or
CD-R) - professionally, if necessary - before attempting to write (surface
scan) to the disk.

If all is well with your HDD, but you are still seeing the "I had 10
retries - do you want to continue getting these messages?" reports, then
download and install ScanDefrag v5.2.

This is a FREE utility, written by several well respected contributors to
these News Groups and has been designed to run several original MS utilities
through a 'filter' which eliminates the usual junk which stops Scandisk (and
Defrag) from running properly in Normal Mode - as you are already
experiencing <g>

You can get ScanDefrag at either of the two sites below - and be sure to
read the associated notes for setting it up:
http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2/scandefrag/main.htm
http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html

HTH and good luck

Gerry,  Have you tried running Enditall.exe before running Scandisk/Defrag.
I have been using this for years in Windows ME and, although the latest version
of this program is somewhat more drastic in what it closes down than the
previous version, it always works for me and is freeware.  Just use the
'Close' option, rather than the 'Kill'. Find it on Google.    HTH.

Me too.....but I stay with the original version.  If anyone needs it, let me
know and I can email it.  The "Kill" word scared me in the newer one, lol.

Hi Heather, Jim, Mart,

Wow! that's great - thanks for all your help ... I've learned a lot Me.

Heather: can you please email me that Enditall program to
gerryp777@hotmail.com -thanks.
I also like the idea of the ScanDefrag too to run at startup - sounds neat!

Thanks all, I'll post how I get on later.        bw, Gerry :o)

Hey Heather, Gerry doesn't *need* Winzip, don't forget that WinMe can
'unzip' zipped files - and create them!

Good.....coz I never used the WinME zip thingy anyway.  Just Winzip.  And
Winrar, sometimes.  But it is so easy to forget stuff when the computer is
not being used.

Does this relate to the loaf with the sesame seeds I got out of the freezer
this morning but haven't touched? Or am I mixing my Mustaphas?

That reminds me of a novel I heard about when I was at school, and I never
have seen it!
