Mike:  At last the application has crashed and the B-----SOD showed :

An exception has occurred at 028:C0011FAB in VxD
called from  0028:C0012B33 in VxD.

Hope this is a clue,

Thanks, Jim

Jim,

Oh dear, I had hoped the error message might have contained details about
the problem module or virtual driver (vxd file).  As it is the error could
be anywhere but I suspect is in your video drivers.  Have you tried
reinstalling these?  I can't remember as this thread started some weeks
ago.

Mike,

No I hadn't thought of these drivers being a problem, but I now recall that some months ago, while trying to persuade a microphone
to work with a slide show program, I installed an inexpensive graphics card (which didn't help) and disconnected the integrated VIA
S3 ProSavage8 Graphics built into my Asus P4VP-MX mobo.
I am now wondering whether this problem began about that time, so I shall switch back and see if this makes a difference - which may
take some time, as just emailing you has made a heap of difference (vbg!)

Thanks for the pointer.

Regards,

Jim.
