The short answer is probably that the control files somehow got corrupted -
possibly either by manual editing of the content, or by an AV scan that
attempted to remove something it shouldn't, or by a disk error
Check your AV and see if it's tried doing anything in the _Restore archive.
Did you run any other malware scanners? did you do anything to any of the
contained files? - disk you run a Scandisk? - what was the scandisk.log
result?

Hi Noel, I appreciate your response.
Answers to your questions--I had not run Scan Disk nor
malware scanners nor virus scan.
I did do some registry cleaning (I know, dangerous) in
trying to purge Works 6.0 but I reviewed the log of deleted
items and did not see anything obviously related to Restore.
Although I guess that could have corrupted something.
Anyhow, a subsequent System Checkpoint was created and I was
able to restore to it successfully so I'm in high cotton
again.
It's ironic that prior to starting my removal/install
activity I had cut a Manual Checkpoint so that I would have
a recovery if I screwed anything up. I think that in the
future I will build a Ghost Image before I start an activity
that may get hairy.
Cheers and thanks for your help.

A simple registry clean should not reset System Restore (unless perhaps the
cleaner predated Win ME/XP), as none of the data pertaining to SR is held in
the registry, except for the startup item *Statemgr.exe - and you'd have
had to re-enable that to get SR working again.
