Dear Forum Fellows:
Network Diagnostics on my Windows Me PC used to work just fine; however, it
has not functioned now for months.
I can start the Network Diagnostics (ND) utility using several methods
[command line in the Run box with
1) an http:// protocol, 2) an hcp:// protocol; 3) the same two command lines
in the Internet Explorer address bar, opening Help & Support first, and then
selecting three links in succession, which runs ND..., running MSInfo and
the selecting ND form the Tool menu... but it doesn't matter, it wont run.
Each attempt concludes the same; with the ND hanging, a busy mouse pointer
and a locked condition that requires me to <Ctrl + Alt +Del> to select "Help
and Support", and END TASK. No information or data are displayed. The
graphics loads, all the icons, images and titles, labels, etc. are present
and appear to be correct.
I mentioned WMI because I get an error: 80041001, which according to my
research is a very basic (generic) WMI failure like, "The Call Failed".
I look forward to your replies.
Thank you,
Locutiss

It may be a more basic problem than you think - does the rest of Help &
Support work OK?

Noel:
I visited the website and verified the issues presented there. Still not
working.
Yes, the rest of H&S does work, at least on the surface; that is, I haven't
checked every single page and link, but overall it works.
Net Diagnostics used to work fine, now it doesn;t work at all.

Sorry about the delayed response - real life intervened for a while! :)
MSInfo32 utility starts Helpctr - which then starts Winmgmt, and proceeds to
do the rest of the work, launching TaskMon, Helpctr. Explorer, and
Iexplore.exe
The only WBEM log you should be looking at, AFAICT, should be the
WinMgmt.log file - are there any relevant errors in there?
Ah! = one common source of errors seen around this is the Oleaut32.dll file
check out the version you're using, and whether there are any other copies
on the system
In my fully updated ME system, the version is 2.40.4515.0, dated 8th June
2000 - and is only present in the C:\Windows\System folder. If your version
is different, then it may be worth reverting to the original version
included with ME. If you have a number of copies, then try renaming all
others to 'oleaut32.dll.jnk' and see if that helps.
