Hello,

I do not have MSJavaVM on my system. And I find I need it as the foundation for the Sun JavaVM platform.

I do not know how to extract it using msconfig and my installation CD. A Search of that CD for MSJavaVM or JavaVM yields nothing when the source is identified as being Win9x. Some guidance here much appreciated.

Thanks.

There is no need to install MS Java to install Sun Java.  Just go ahead
and install the Sun Java VM.  Remember that the MS Java VM is no longer
supported by Microsoft nor forms part of their operating systems.

Don't waste your time, just install Sun Java.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for responding.

Here is what I (foolishly) did yesterday. I used the Windows Installer CleanUp tool msicuu.exe and removed MSJava. I already had the latest Sun Java installed (1.5.0_06) just prior to that removal. I find now that I can no longer access Geocities which informs me that I do not have Java VM and offers me a download. Which if clicked on takes me here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/getosver/javaxp.mspx

'No Java Installed' the message.

Does the install of Sun Java Runtime Environment not include the VM? In other words prior to the mentioned deletion I did not have a problem with my (regular) accessing of Geocities. Do you think I need to uninstall Sun and re-install it?

Thanks, Mike.

Hello Mike,

The uninstall/reinstall worked. From which I believe my using the cleanup tool had, in some way, damaged the Sun installation.

I would surely like to master this Exract File tool in msconfig though.

"I do not know how to extract it using msconfig and my installation
CD. A Search of that CD for MSJavaVM or JavaVM yields nothing when
the source is identified as being Win9x. Some guidance here much
appreciated"

It has frustrated me for years now. So what search terms would I use to extract the VM from my CD? Or doesn't it qualify as a 'file' and cannot be extracted? Which means a re-install of WinME?

Not that I am going to do it now - just have the need to know.

Thanks, Mike.

Ben,

Whilst it is useful to know how to extract files using MSConfig (although
IMO it is often easier to do this by double clicking on the relevant cab
file and dragging a new copy of the file required to the desktop), DO NOT
waste your time playing with the MS Java VM.  This has nothing to do with
the Sun Java VM and is not required to install the Sun Java VM.

To extract a file using MSConfig, open the General tab, click Extract,
enter file name you wish to restore in the box and click start.  In the
next box that opens enter the path to the folder containing the Win Me cab
files in the top box (usually either C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or
C:Windows\Options\Install but if not, the folder containing the file
BASE2.CAB, and in the lower box enter the location to which file is to be
restored (or the desktop if all you want to do is get a copy of the file)
and then click OK.  Note however that for files protected by Win Me's
System File Protection mechanism this must be done in Safe Mode,
remembering all the time that certain key system files can only be
replaced by booting to DOS (or using the wininit mechanism).

That would be my approach to the problem, so yes.

Hello Mike,

The KB129605 link has changed to:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q129605/

Thanks for the help.

Two further questions:

How can I view what is contained in .CAB files? The base2.cab, for example, opens in Notepad and looks like this:

c>i{3#óOÿL2G etc etc

What is that 'script' called?  I just want a name. I have puzzled about it for years and I am not getting any younger or smarter. Please?

Cheers, Mike.

Ben.

Ben,

There is nothing wrong with my 129605 link
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=129605) other than that OE for some
reason added ").and" to the end of the link.

I'll give you a clue. <g>  If it's possible to extract a file by "double
clicking on the relevant cab file and dragging a new copy of the file
required to the desktop" I'd suggest that double clicking on the file
might be a good place to start looking.

I'm sorry but I don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about
here.

Mike,

I double click on the base2.cab and I get the 'Open With...' dialog box and I do not know with what program to open it - so I select Notepad and the contents appear on Notepad in the form of the script? which you didn't know what I was on about in my previous post.

I have tried selecting several of the other programs but nothing works. I cannot find out what the base2.cab file contains - or any of the other.cabs either. Am I missing something?

How odd.  I have a clean install of Win Me here and double clicking a cab
file opens it.  Notepad is about the last program on earth that one should
use to try and see and understand the contents of what is a compressed
file. <g> Next time rather than Open With click Explore which should be at
the top of the list on a right click (by default Explore is the default
and appears bold in the list).  For some reason the default has been
changed on your system.

> Am I missing something?

Yes, lots.  Let Windows Explorer's Search be your friend.  If you want to
find which cab contains a specific file then search the cab folder but
rather than entering the name of the file you are looking for in the top
"Search for files or folders named" box enter it in the second "Containing
text" box.  Note though that knowing which cab file contains which file is
unnecessary when using MSConfig | Extract, all that is needed, as I
mentioned earlier, is to point Extract at the folder containing the cab
files.

Base2.cab has no special significance, I mentioned it simply because it is
the first of the cab files that appear in the folder.

Mike,

I have no Explore on the right click except on folders. I think my system, which has been working to my satisfaction until the difficulty with Sun Java which prompted this post, is now showing its imperfect self.

The cure as well I know is a format and install. However the loss of 'Explore' is the only problem which has shown up since I made certain changes to WinMe some 5 weeks ago so I will continue on until something important shows up in terms of fault.

Thanks for your patience, Mike.

Ben.

I wouldn't read this - but it may explain. Go easy on me, Mike.

What you do to your system is for you alone to decide and not my business
however remember that if you choose to play with your system then you have
only yourself to blame if something goes wrong (I'm not saying that it
will go wrong) and you must then provide your own help and support rather
than looking for others to help.

I'm sorry but I only retain NG messages for around 5 days so I haven't a
clue as to the contents of your earlier thread and don't intend reloading
the NG to find out.  Not that system restore has anything to do with Win
Me's handling of cab files or the default Explore entry that is usually
present when right clicking a file with a cab extension which are registry
entries. :-)

PS A couple of further thoughts for when wanting to view the contents of a
CAB file.
a) Select file, right click, Open With and select Windows Explorer (that
is explorer.exe in the windows folder,
b) Associate files with a CAB extension with an application such as
WinZip,

Hello Mike,

I am feeling a trifle smug! I had tried the first of your suggestions last night and found explorer.exe wouldn't open the CABs so I installed WinZip - which does the job; so I am happy with that. :-)

My 'slimming-down' of WinME has included deleting as much of the System Restore function as I can - a Search for _restore yields only one TEMP folder which contains 2 files dated yesterday and of type 0 and 1. I have 'removed': Help and Support; PC Health ( a search for which reveals no entries), Task Scheduler, Dr Watson and Kodak Imaging.

My startup axis, as logged in HijackThis, is:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ScanRegistry] C:\WINDOWS\scanregw.exe /autorun
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTray] SysTray.Exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Run StartupMonitor] StartupMonitor.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme
O4 - Startup: Resource Meter.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\RSRCMTR.EXE

I have no security freeware (I don't regard HJT as such) including no Anti-Virus. My Internet Options settings are 'wide open' and my router is no longer employed.

It is 5 months since I opted out of security and 5 weeks since I did the 'slimming-down'. I have no regrets - and my system is running very well.

I do lots of maintenance (including of the registry). Delindex, ScanDefrag and Spider are favourite freewares. RegSeeker and jv16pt (old version) serve me well.

So there it is, Mike. And thank-you.

With regards to yourself and Noel.

Ben.

Ben,

Something which in my opinion is totally and absolutely mad and crazy.
System Restore and System File Protection are at the very heart of Win Me
and if you don't want this essential functionality why on earth are you
using the OS?  It would be much better to stick with Win 98 if not Win 95
or perhaps even Windows 3.1.  Why oh why do you strip out the state
manager and then load the resource meter and startup monitor each time you
boot - to me not only an odd decision but also odd set of priorities.

Personally I feel you've trashed your system but it's yours to do what you
want and it's not for me to comment other than that now knowing this I
won't be replying in future to any requests for help you might make as I
realise now I will be wasting my time.  :-)

Cheers,

Mike M

Hello Mike,

I promise not to attempt to seek help again until I am reformed and WinME is restored to its former glory!

Cheers. :-)
