My friend is running windows me.
She can only run in safe mode, and when safe mode boots up, receive
message "
cannot start oleaut32.dll"
She can't run any programs.
She replaced oleaut32.dll, downloaded copy from the web, copied into
c:\windows\system
directory.
Still doesn't work.
Help Her!!

No surprise that it still doesn't work as oleaut32.dll cannot be replaced
in the way you describe. How does your friend even know they have
downloaded the correct version? The chances are they haven't.
OLEAUT32.DLL cannot be replaced by simply copying a new copy to the
Windows\System folder, the reason being that OLEAUT32.DLL is protected by
Win Me's System File Protection and since it is nearly always in use has
to be replaced by booting to DOS and working from the DOS prompt.

Following on from Mike M's reply AND assuming OLEAUT32.DLL is the cause of
the problem :-
A 'fresh' copy can be extracted locally from the WIN_14.CAB file either in
the \win9x folder on an MS retail version of the WinMe CD or in the
Windows\Options\Instal (or CABS) folder the C: drive. The correct version is
2.40.4515.0 dated 8 June 2000 @ 17:00:00 Hrs.
Downloading a copy from the web is not such a good idea.
