I need to create a boot floppy with a bat file to run SpinRite. I keep
getting an error "Windows has diabled direct disk access to protect your long
filenames. To override this protection, see LOCK/? command for more
information" Typing LOCK/? at the command prompt printed to screen very
limited information. I don't understand enough to proceed.

How are you trying to create your boot floppy?  Add/Remove Programs |
Startup Disk or by formatting a floppy and dragging to it copies of io.sys
and command.com from the Windows\Command\EBD folder?

Add/remove is the only way I know of. Can you explain this other method a
little further?

Nothing to add.
Format floppy, drag copies of io.sys and command.com from the
Windows\Command\EBD folder to floppy.
Use floppy to boot to DOS.
You can top and tail this basic boot floppy as required by adding drivers
etc.  Note that the ability to simply drag copies of io.sys and
command.com to a floppy to make it bootable was introduced with Win Me.
