I got a nasty virus, and had to reformat and reinstall Win Me. Ever since I
get an error code Start Error KRNL386.exe every time i try to use my cd
rom/re drive. Can anyone tell me how to fix it?

May be due to a damaged/corrupted driver during the p-n-p enumeration
(detection) process of the CD-ROM at the time of the WinMe installation.

Boot into Safe Mode and in Device Manager, 'Remove' any/all CD-ROM(s).
Re-boot (into Normal Mode) and let WinMe re-detect the CD-ROM.

Any improvement?

the error when i try to load a game cd "start error in KRNL386.exe  Start
program will now close" i have ran a total scan disk, and re installed my
drivers, but i still get the error. Still need help please.

Might be the start of a failing CD-ROM - or even the laser and/or CD's need
cleaning. CD-ROM's do start to 'die' after a few years.

For a more 'in depth' test of your CD-ROM and the following ASS-U-MEs only
CD-ROM on your PC :-

Boot (into Real Mode DOS) using your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk in the A:
drive. Select option 2. Start computer with CD-ROM support.

Let the screen information scroll until you eventually see a line which
should report a drive letter for the CD-ROM - but note that it may not
necessarily the same letter as you would expect to see in Windows.

For example, you should see the CD-ROM, becoming the E:, so the screen
should show:
> Drive E:= Driver MSCD001 UNIT 0
> Your CD-ROM Is Drive E

When the boot disk finally settles down, you will be presented with an A:\>
prompt.

Now put a (data) CD into the CD-ROM and at the A:\> prompt, type "E:" (no
quotes and note the colon after the letter E) Then Press Return.

Now, at the E:\> prompt, type "DIR /P" (no quotes and note the space) Then
press Return.

You should see a listing of the CD contents. Try with several CD's
especially the games CD's

Come back with your results. Give EXACT errors reports - if any
