Hi,
I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX450, about 5 years old, running Windows ME.
I had Norton Systemworks 2003 on it, but have uninstalled it trying to take
care of this problem.
When in Norton Utilities (Disk Doctor), I haven't been able to run Disk
Doctor successfully for well over a year -- for the C Drive (It worked fine
on D Drive -- 40gb HD partitioned to two 20's). I'd get an error in NDDENG
something or other. I also couldn't run ScanDisk for C Drive (but this
program also ran fine diagnosing D Drive). The Scandisk problem occurred
before the NDD problem. For a few months, I was able to sub the Norton
Utility for the Windows one.
I looked for Microsoft backup disks and can't find any. I have four Sony
CDs -- two for system recovery, one for driver recovery and one for
application recovery. I can't find any instructions for extracting
scandskw.exe or dskmaint.dll from these disks.
If you can help me figure this out, I would appreciate it.
By the way, after having uninstalled Norton Systemworks, I tried to run Disk
Doctor right from the CD, and I got the same error as I got running it from
the installed Systemworks (which used to work just fine). I had figured that
something in the installed program had gotten corrupted, maybe during a
Norton "Live Update" to the program, but the original CD-ROM returns the same
error.
Thank you!

As your system is 'riddled' with Norton stuff (and may well have screwed-up
your installation. Norton and WinMe do not mix!), I can't help in that
direction - but in response to your dilemma :-

Depending on what your OEM (Sony?) supplied and installed (Not all OEM's
installed them) on your computer you *may* find a complete fresh set of
WinMe installation files in the Windows. C:Windows\Options\Instal or CABS
folder (containing a whole series of .CAB files). Again, depending on the
OEM, these .CAB files *may* be located elsewhere, so you will have to search
for them. If supplied :-
scandiskw.exe can be found in the WIN_17.CAB file
dskmaint.dll can be found in PRECOPY1.CAB
If you are not sure how to extract files, see either :-
"How to Extract and Replace a Protected File in Windows Me"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265371/en-us
or
"HOW TO: Extract Original Compressed Windows Files"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/129605/en-us
BTW - Scandisk can also be run in Safe Mode and in Real Mode DOS (using your
WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk)
Good luck - I think you might need it!
