the issue, i got a new tune up did all the registry clean ups and
nothing. i downloaded lavasoft adaware nothing , avg antivirus and spam

i ran proper steps to boot after i configured msconfig nothing i booted
and hit f8 and it wont let me boot in safe mode??? if anyone has any

Playing with registry cleanup and tune up programs can have many adverse
effects including unfortunately totally trashing the system.  Another
problem is that these programs can also damage system restore but there
are many other programs that can have the same effect including running
any product carrying either the Norton or Symantec name none of which are
suited to use with Win Me regardless of what they say on the box.

So how to proceed?  I would suggest booting to DOS using a Win Me startup
floppy and then, at the A:\> prompt entering
SCANREG   /RESTORE
and then from the five dates offered choose the most recent that predates
your problems.  This will restore the registry to the state it was in at
that time and before you started removing essential entries.

I would then most strongly advise you to get system restore working
correctly (post back to a new thread if you need help with this) before
you start playing with the registry or installing damaging adware laden
products.

XP has no SCANREG /RESTORE command.  Instead boot to the startup menu
(keep tapping F8 when booting) and then use the Last Known Good link which
will hopefully get you back up and running.  For more details see MS
KB307852 - "How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good
Configuration feature in Windows XP"

I've got plenty of ideas the first 100 or so of which are that you post
details of your problem to an appropriate newsgroup, that is one that
supports those running XP. <g>  However it looks as if with you neither
able to use Last Known Good or Safe Mode that you may have to perform a
repair install.

Alternatively restore your backup.  If you don't back up your system
partition periodically then once you have got your system back up running
that this would then be a good time to consider doing this starting with a
copy of your restored system.  One problem here however being the amount
of space required for those who run with huge system partitions.  One
advantage I've always found for keeping my system partition small (8GB
here on my XP boxes) and containing no data, temp files, TIF, desktop and
a minimum size swap file, meaning that I can fully backup and verify my
C:\ drive in less than ten minutes.
