I use system tools to limit the number of startup items so I can run the
maintenance like defrag, scan disk and clean up.  My computer kept starting
over when doing this in normal mode.  I have done this a number of times, but
this time I cannot switch back to normal mode.  My desktop look fuzzy, but
system tools says it is in normal mode.  I have restarted it a number of
times also.  Please help!

You probably are in normal mode but with the wrong resolution and colour
depth.  Right click on a blank area of the desktop, select Properties and
then open the Settings tab and set the screen resolution and colour
quality to your requirements and then click Apply.

Well, I messed up again!  I thought by erasing and reinstalling Windows Me
with my disk's that came from Gateway that I could fix it.  Now I have only
the icons from 2000 when I bought the computer and no access to aol it is not
identifying my DSL modem.  It looks as if my files and folders are still on
my C drive, but the computer seems to be worthless now.

Oh dear, why did you reinstall rather than following my suggestion?

What you have to do now is set up your PC again by installing the various
drivers, etc. it needs.  Your DSL modem probably came with a disk, use
that to install the necessary drivers.  If you've lost the disk download
the necessary files from the modem manufacturer's web site using another
PC and then copy the download to your Win Me PC and install the drivers.

I had already started the process Sunday night and thought I could go home
and do a system restore and then check the resolution and color.  It was too
late by that time as I see now.  My system restore will not restore anymore
either.  It will set a restore date, but only maybe one per month.  It said
it was unseccessful this time.  I appreciate your help though.  I took my cpu
to a computer repair store at lunch to see if they could help me get it back
to the way I wanted it.  I only want to burn cd's, have access to the
internet and I would like for it to run a little better than before.  I hope
they can help me do this since the computer and software when new was about
$2,000.00 from Gateway.  Thanks again for your help and quick response.  I
reacted too fast though by making the decision to reinstall.  I guess I will
use this as a learning experience of what not to do.  Yodcr11

Let's try and set out a few facts.

You've reinstalled Win Me.  All previous system restore checkpoints will
have been removed as part of that install and system restore is broken
until you install the 290700 patch since the reinstall will have installed
the original versions of many files that were updated by subsequent
hotfixes including the updated version of smgr.dll which is essential for
system restore to create usable checkpoints since September 2001.

Help.  The only help you need is to install the various programs and
drivers just as you did when you first purchased your PC.  Whilst taking
your PC to a local shop is one, somewhat expensive route to take, doing
the work yourself would have cost little other than for some of your time.

Reinstalling an operating system such as you did is virtually the past
option to take when encountering problems, the last being to repartition
and format the hard disk and then clean install the operating system.

Best of luck,

Thank you, I do have two more questions.  If I need to download hotfixes,
will there be a blue million of them to do since the software was released in
2000 and will there still be all of the security fixes available?  Also, why
do I still see my old downloads when I search for files and folders?  I'm
sorry, I have three.  Where are you located?  Just curious.

All current fixes are still available at both the Windows Update site (for
downloading to the PC that requires updating) or the Windows Update
Catalogue (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp)
where they can be downloaded to any PC and then transferred to the Win Me
PC and installed by running the executable.  This latter method is useful
as it allows you to save the patches in case you need to use them again.

Superseded patches will naturally no longer be available, for example only
the most recent Monthly roll-up for Internet Explorer will be available.

Since you appear to have reinstalled Win Me over itself rather than clean
install this means that much will be left over from your previous
installation including, of course, all of your important user files and
installed programs.  The down side is that the registry wasn't reset and
no longer correctly records which patches have been installed or not.  I
would therefore strongly urge you to download and run Belarc's Adviser
(http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) as this will help you to
identify any updates that are broken and might need to reinstalling.
Belarc uses a different mechanism to check than the Windows Update site.
I'm more worried about possible problems you might have following the
reinstall if you had previously installed Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) and
Windows Media Player 9 (WMP9) as this might mean that both IE and WMP will
not function correctly.
