My 12 yr old daughter use Windows Me for her School reports and a few games
installed but no internet use but she loves to draw and save in Wallpaper and
screensaver and this last drawing of a flowers has locked her system up and
we do not have to CD and would like to know if it is possible to buy a new
one we are the original owners of PC but after trying to restore it to a
earlier time nothing is removing the error message we are getting and we are
not able to do anything on it nor remove any programs or get into a program
any help you can give us is greatly needed.

It might help if you were to tell us (exactly) what that error message says.

How did you previously 'try to restore it to a earlier time' - using System
Restore?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode (F8 or Ctrl key during start-up) and
do you still get the same error report?

(You may be able to 'Undo my last restoration' in System Restore if you are
able to get it to work in Safe Mode and you think that it might help)

Also, it *may* also be possible to make yourself a (WinMe) CD once you've
sorted this problem out - and assuming that the PC has a CD writer fitted
and installed on it!! - But that's for later.

Thanks Mart

It seems everytime I turn this computer on it's another error message here
are a few of the messages:  MNKEYBD has caused an error in Mmkey.bd will now
close. 2. Not enough memory to start MMUSBKB2.EXE. quit somerograms and then
try again. 3.  Not enough memory to start c:\windows\System\wininet.DLL. 4.
There is not enough memory to start CRYPT32.DLL. 5. Not enough memory to
start c:\program Files\NETROP\on screendisplay\OSD.EXE 6. runtime error
Program c:\windows\delayrun.EXE R6028 unable to initialized heap and on my
tool bar it shows ERROR STARTING PROGRAM  Now the IE has error Explorers has
caused error in Kernel 32.DLL They are a few more errors showing so it seems
I'm causing more problems then solving anything.  I tried to go into programs
and it says empty cannot go in to my control panel either any help I can get
is greatlt needed.

You certainly have problems jaymom! - most (I suspect) are hardware/driver
issues, especially with your USB keyboard (and mouse?) and possibly memory
or even hard drive issues. Too far away to be more precise.  NETROP? should
that be NETROPA?

My first suggestion would be to revert to a standard ps/2 or serial keyboard
and mouse (the originals?) and see if that helps.

Also, you need a WinMe Startup floppy disk (if you ever had one? # see
later) to see how your pc behaves in Real Mode DOS and then do some memory
testing - and even confirm that your HDD is good.

'delayrun.exe' would appear to be a Hewlett Packard test program - see:-
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/delayrun/
I have no knowledge of this utility so can't really help with it.

However, I guess therefore that you seem to have an HP computer (OEM) and
that *might* explain why you haven't got a WinMe CD. Unfortunately, you may
have to consult HP as to how to proceed further.

# As you are the 'original owners' of the PC, do you still have the User
Manual and stuff which came with the PC? There may be some guidance there.

Thanks Mart
Going to give HP A call to see if they can assist me any further. Yes it
should be NETROPA.  The mouse and keyboard are the original ones that came
with computer, I did switch keyboards to see if that was part of my problem
and I'm pretty sure it is part of it.  Thanks for your help and input and if
HP can assist me. I will post my outcome. Otherwise I will just throw it out
on trash day since Microsoft adviced me to upgrade it to XP home and with the
cost I will do better to buy a new one. I have XP home and Professional not
ready for Vista just yet.

Good luck with HP but my guess is that you may find that you have to pay for
help with what I suspect is by now, an out-of-warranty system.

If you do, don't forget to put a hammer thru' the hard drive first! -
Identity theft and all that!!

You are so right.  Hp was unable to get me a Win/Me CD.  I have worked on
this for the past two days and get it to do better each time but it still
seems I need to reinstall windows so my last question to you will be is it
possible for me to install a New Win/Me, Win/Me upgrade or XP Home
successfully with the one error I can't get off not enough memory to run this
program or I would still have the same problem.  My daughter has been in
tears since yesterday when I told her we would have to get rid of the
computer since it was the last gift my deceased brother gave her and it's her
memory of him.

jaymom,

Yes, it is 'possible' - but not recommended to over-install. (I would forget
trying to install XP on your old machine). But that really is a personal
decision and from here, my guess is that you are somewhat of a novice and
therefore you might have more than a little difficulty in knowing how to
'start-over' with a clean installation. You might even need professional
assistance. Bear in mind that WinMe is obsolete and now almost 7 years old
and is no longer supported by Microsoft, not to mention that your computer
is probably of a similar age (and hardware does wear out!) - and is
obviously no longer supported by HP.

You might find that all the trouble and expense incurred in trying to
'repair' your existing machine (and you'd *still* have an old, obsolete
machine!) approaches the cost of a relatively inexpensive 'brand new' one
with an up to date operating system and at least a couple of years warranty.

Hmm.. you might even find that you spend more time repairing it than you do
using it - educational and interesting as that may be <g>

Your suggestion, not mine!

However, if you do decide to attempt to proceed with a repair, then by all
means re-visit the WinMe newsgroups and I'm sure there will be some friendly
advice available to talk-you-thru'. But first, you'll need to get a copy of
the WinMe CD - try ebay, local computer shows, or second-hand shops,  etc.
Once armed with the CD (and a legitimate 25 digit key code!), only then can
you proceed.

In the meantime, you might wish to look at :-
"Uninstalling and Reinstalling IE - In Windows ME"
http://www.crashfixpc.com/ReInIE.htm
to give you a flavour of what might be involved.

Good luck

jaymom,

I should have posted the following page from Noel's site - but do please
have a good read of all of his excellent pages :-

"Re-installing ME over itself"
http://www.crashfixpc.com/reinME.htm

Also look for and read (if you can find it in your Windows folder)
cleanhd.txt or go to the following site :-
"Windows Millennium Edition Cleanhd.txt File Contents"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;271673
