why do I keep getting an email which says in subject patch
from Microsoft.  My Norton catches it and says it has a
virus.  Is Microsoft actually sending it or not?

As the others mentioned, what you are receiving is a bogus
e-mail with a virus attached.  I mentioned in another
thread in this newsgroup that I unwisely put one of my e-
mail addresses in the reply line here, and very quickly I
was getting a dozen Norton warnings a day...including some
purportedly from Microsoft.  So you're getting virus
warnings for a very good reason.  DON'T OPEN THEM!
