Explorer Error Message

My computer worked fine last night but when I booted up
tonight I got an error message saying "Explorer has caused
an error in 8272807082.tmp. Explorer will now close. If
you continue to experience problems try re-starting your
computer."

I've re-started several times but still get the message,
which pops up in a box shortly after Windows finishes
loading.  There is no option for ignoring the problem--
only a Close option.  When I click that, all my icons go
away and I'm left only with my pretty horse screensaver. I
can do nothing and leave the box on the screen and that
allowed me to go online.  Any advise will be most
appreciated.

Also, possibly (probably) connected, when I booted up
initially I got a message about updating configuration
files.  To my knowledge I haven't done anything to justify
that message.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Such errors are often caused by spyware - download AdAware from
www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Thanks Noel.  I downloaded, installed, and ran the AdAware
and it not only took care of the original problem, but
another one as well.  I had run Norton AV and it came up
with 3 files infected by a Trojan virus which Norton was
unable to delete.  In fact, I couldn't even find the
files, even after disabling hidden files.  The last
recommendation Norton had was to use a rescue disk to boot
and then run Norton again.  The question I have now is,
how would one run Norton without loading Windows?  I guess
it's a moot point now because I ran Norton again after
running AdAware and no viruses were found.  Obviously the
immunized files included the 3 infected files.

Thanks again, You're my hero!

Norton is a POS when running on ME - I really do advise you to consider
changing your AV.

As far as your 3 'viruses' are concerned, there is a big difference between
viruses and Trojans - and Norton did not deal at all with Trojans or spyware
until recently - and they're still bl77dy awful at it.

One of the things that spyware frequently does is install a Trojan so force
the user back into the 'target' area - where either data can be harvested,
or certain actions forced. This is why Ad-Aware has been dealing routinely
with Trojans for some time - an why they are so much better at it than
Norton!

(Ad-Aware does NOT deal in viruses - except under certain circumstances - so
you still require a good AV kept up-to-date)

The Norton Rescue Disk that you create from the NAV option is in fact a DOS
version of Norton, running from floppy - the problem here is that unless you
make frequent copies of the disk, it's unlikely that you'll be able to
create an uninfected floppy set from the machine you want to clean - so
would have to find another clean machine with Norton, etc - OTOH, you can
download a DOS virus scanner from www.f-prot.com free, on any known-clean
machine, and create the disks there, for use on your machine.
