Uninstall etrust EZ Armour AV

OK so I installed the free etrust EZ Armour suite.  Guess I should have
known better than to install this freebee piece of crap.

I could never get the AV to autodownload the virus definition files so that
never worked.  The firewll seemed to be working ok.  Never received a
response from customer support after several attempts so I decided to
uninstall the whole suite (AV, firewall).  Well, the firewall portion seemed
to uninstall ok but the anti-virus remains there with no uninstall option in
the directory or in the Add/Remove programs in control panel.

Also the thing automatically starts itself up and there is no option
anywhere to even close and exit out of the program- what is the deal with
this?  There is no reference to it in the startup directory.

How do I safely get rid of this AV program?  I didnt want to simply delete
all the files in the directory.  I also tied to re-downlad the program with
the hopes that I could reinstall and then uninstall everything successfully.
Apparently, they do not allow you to download the program a second time as
my link from the email I received from CA does not work.

Thanks in advance for any help.

FYI the eTrust AV application included as part of EZArmor is anything but
a freebee piece of cr$p and is working well here on a number of PCs and on
probably many millions of others worldwide.  eTrust together with AVG are
two of the most popular low cost AV applications used and together with
NOD32 and Kaspersky are amongst the most popular AV applications used by
those who care for their PCs.

That you have problems is unfortunate and given your problems when trying
to uninstall suggests that perhaps the application never installed
correctly in the first place.  I would therefore suggest that you try
reinstalling EXArmor including the eTrust AV part since if this now
installs correctly this should allow you to uninstall the application
properly.

Ditto......works fine on my WinME computer.  And I only have the freebie EZ
antivirus part.  But obviously this person is like my *esteemed*
brother-in-law......who can't download anything properly.....EVER!!  (G)

Ok, I should not have been so quick to slam etrust.  I will try to reinstall
(I found a separate link to download)

It does seem odd that the program does not llow an option to exit out of it
/ disable it / stop it from running.  Have you found this to be the case?
Also, it does seem odd that several attempts at contacting customer support
went unanswered - have you found this to be typical?

Thanks for the assistance.

OK, I guess I should not have been so quick to trash the etrust EZ armour
suite.  I did redownload and tried it again (supposedly it successfully
installed this time as well) with the same problems as far as the AV portion
being  unable to download what it needs to run.

I still have been unable to find a way to disable / turn off / exit from
these programs (without uninstalling them).  It appears that they always are
active and they can not be shut down?  Could you tell me if I am missing
something here?

Also, I did attempt to contact customer support once again outlining the
exact nature of the problem I am having.  I thoroughly searched their
site/knowledge base and could not locate an answer to the problem I am
having.  Do you know if it is typical for them not to respond?

Thanks for your help.

Having reinstalled EZArmor are you saying that you are still unable to
remove the entire application including eTrust AV?  If so then something
very off is going on and not something I ever recall having seen reported
before.  As for your problems in obtaining updated signature files a
couple of questions if I may.  How are you connecting to the net?  Are you
suing a router with NAT or a firewall on Win Me?  If so have you
configured this appropriately to allow eTrust to download updates - it
does this using FTP?

As for Computer Associates Help & Support, I don't think much of them
either.  I've received replies to enquiries I've made in the past but only
ever stock references to CA knowledge base articles and IMO they seem to
be either unwilling or unable to provide usable responses to specific
queries.

Mike:

I decided to give the whole suit (AV and firewall) another try.  So I have
not tried to unistall the whole thing again.

What I meant was that I can not locate an option on the program to get out
of it (Exit the program).  For example, if I open MS Excel, work for a while
in it and then want to close Excel so it is no longer open / running in the
background, I would simple go File-Exit or click the X in the upper right
corner.  Excel then closes and is no longer running on my system.

Lets say I want to close/Exit etrust AV (not uninstall) until I figure out a
way to get the signatures downloaded.  Well, I have not been able to find a
way to do this.  Can it be done?  Am I missing something?  If it cant be
done (without going into MSconfig or some other system thing)then why is it
set up this way?

I never had a firewall before installing the one included in the etrust EZ
suite.  That firewall is up and running but I would have thought the
installation would have taken care of any configuration issues between
etrust EZ AV & etrust EZ Firewall.  I am not connecting using a router, just
a simple cable modem connection.

Thanks again, Keith

Keith,

I apparently misunderstood your question since the subject of this thread
was about uninstalling EZArmor.

Firewall - understood.  In this case I'd forgotten we were talking about
eTrust AV as part of EZArmor.  :-)

Exiting eTrust.  Not as straight forward as it appears since AV
application run as a service and is tied in to the underlying operating
system.  You can however uncheck the Vet Alert and VetTray entries in
MSConfig | Startup and rebooting although even then a background service
may still be running.  I'm not sure of the benefit of this though since
you can disable Real-Time protection on the options tab in eTrust AV.

I'm still not clear though what problems you are having when trying to
update eTrust's signatures.  Prior to writing this post I've just tested
the EZArmor install again on a clean out of the box install of Win Me.
During the install the AV component accessed the net and pulled down
aup_5835.exe using ftp from ftpez.ca.com.  Now that it is installed I can
click Autodownload and it checks for updates and reports back that I am up
to date.  This is logged in the file autodown.txt.  Does this contain a
clue as to your problems.  On this system that file is located in
C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust EZ Armor\eTrust EZ Antivirus.  You can also
check the log by opening eTrust AV, and then View | View log files |
Autodownload.

Is that the way all anti-virus software works (i.e., "... tied in to the
underlying operating system")?

I was aware of the autodown.txt file.  In fact I sent the appropriate error
message from this file to CA several times.

You mentioned AVG antivirus earlier.  Is that a product worth getting if I
can not ultimately resolve this problem?

Thanks, Keith

Keith,

May I ask a question?  You say you cannot download updates but have yet to
post any details of the error messages you are seeing.  Doing this could
well lead to you being given a solution to your problems.

All AV applications and firewalls run as services.  Unless they do so they
cannot provide any background functionality such as real time scanning.

AVG (www.grisoft.com).  I'd hold off here for the moment as the free AVG 6
is in transition and due to be replaced by a free version of the newer AVG
7 next month.

Mike:

Since this is a WinME newsgroup, I did not think it appropriate to post the
error message from CA's AV software and ask you to look at it (I realize my
post has sort of digressed from a WinME uninstall question).  But, if you
are willing to take a look at the error message/other info in the
autodown.txt file I will definitely share it with you -thanks for the offer.
I am currently at work but will post back with the info tonight.

Thanks again, Keith

Keith,

Fair comments.  If you want to send me a copy of the log (mikem@mvps.org)
I'll try and see if there is anything there that strikes a chord.

Cheers,

Just an observation.....
In my (limited) experience, problems like this are often likely to be caused
by pre-existing infestations with malware of some kind - which prevents the
AV loading at startup.

it may be worth running a couple of online scanners over the system to check
(Trend, McAfee, and others offer such scanners), as well as running the
McAfee Stinger (or other targeted scanner)

Here follows my 'standard post' for such situations,,,,,

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding you as well......but why would you want to
turn off your firewall and antivirus protection?  The whole point of it is
to have it running in the background ALL of the time.  You don't need to
turn it off to download new definitions.

And the firewall part of this is the free Zone Alarm.....a program I have
used for some 5 years, along with EZ Trust.....so it is a reputable one.
And a very good one.

Now.....did I get something wrong in how I interpret the message below??
And I have had good results with tech support from CA.  But I may be in the
minority.....must be my green eyes, grin!!

The only reason I was considering turning it off temporarily was because it
wasnt working since it could not download the signature files yet it
continued to try and connect to the CA server (unsuccessfully) about every 5
minutes.  I thought I would quit out of the program until the folks at CA
got back to me with a fix for the problem.  I was just surprised to find out
that you can not simply do that!  This has been going on for several weeks
with no response from several inquiries to CA outlining the exact error
message that I am getting.

Thanks

Odd......I have had speedy answers from them.  I used the tech support part
on their website the last time, but do have an address which is Canadian,
but you could try it.

MyeTrustSupport@ca.com

Good luck....Heather

The problem is not with the program, Keith, but with your machine and the
way you handle it. That may be hard to swallow, but it's fact.
Why not start all over again and do it right?
