A couple of nights ago, my computer (HP invent, Windows ME, Celeron)
crashed. I got a strange desktop, which looked like the memory was
erased, but I wasn't able to do any of the things that Explorer.exe
does (opening up directories, moving around the file structure, etc).

When the machine froze up and I rebooted, Windows ME couldn't come
up again. I used a boot disk to get access, and I was unable to start
Windows ME. I couldn't even start Safe Mode.

This has continued over the past few days; I can get to the Windows ME
Startup Menu and can get a minimal boot, but I can't boot Windows with
CD-ROM support, or without it; I get an error (described below). After
checking out memory (even running scandisk, and with the surface scan),
I type "win" to continue the boot, and I get the message below.

It's the old "The Microsoft Installable File System Manager cannot find
the helper driver. Please ensure that IFSHLP.SYS has been installed.
System Halted" message on the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death). I've gone to
Microsoft's no-help website (the one with number 258471) and followed
their instructions, but it didn't help.

I can also see a message about the registry, but I can't read it because
the BSOD comes up too fast.

I've reached the point there don't seem to be any on-line suggestions
other than "reinstall Windows ME". I backed up my files last week onto
CD-rom, and I've moved all the ones I modified recently onto floppies,
so this wouldn't be a bad time to do it. Is there anything else I can
do in the meantime that isn't so destructive? Thanks.

Update to the message below: I looked around on my hard drive last night,
and I discovered that all the files in the root directory (C:\.) were
missing. I now suspect a virus, not glitches in the hard drive. I may have
to re-install Windows ME after all, and I'll be looking for ways to do
that without destroying the files already on there, if that's possible.

Hi there:
Just to share my frustations with you!
I got same message and same problems. The difference is, you know more about
computers than I do. I tried my backup disks with no results. Anyways post
back so I can read what and how you got running again!!
Good luck.
Manny
