Device Manager.....Yellow Mark

On checking the above, under System Devices, I have two entries for
"Programmable Interrupt Controller".....the first one is working
properly.....the second one has a yellow circle with an exclamation mark and
it is not working properly.

I wrote down all the information on the good one and the bad one has the
same info under the tab 'Resources'.  On the General Tab, it says "This
device is causing a resource conflict (Code 15).....to resolve it , click
Hardware Troubleshooter, etc"....which of course, won't work.

So obviously the first one is the OK one and I just wanted to make sure that
removing the bad one is the right thing to do.  Couldn't find anything in
Help on this.

Thanks......Heather

Hi, Figgs!!!!

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL instances of duplicated devices
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' branch
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.

Thanks, Puss.....but I don't know what in heck "Other Devices" are.....I
think that this device (not to mention Device Manager in general) could be
part XP, which I tried many times to install over the weekend.  It wouldn't
work and I uninstalled it.....not easily, by any means.  So I do have quite
a number of unfamiliar folders, files and now probably devices on this here
computer.  8-((

It is working fine.....no problems so far.  But am being very careful and
studying these things.  It has not been a good week, to say the least!!
Weighing my options at this point.  And there are more than one.

Cheers.....Heather

Where do I start??  Constantly crashed *when* I could get into it......which
was about 1 out of 5 tries.  Had a hell of a time installing it, but had
gotten so far with the first one that it had taken over......yet not fully
installed.  Spent 24 hours trying to get it to stop crashing and finally
gave up and uninstalled it (took 4 tries due to crashing)......so I have one
hell of a mess on here, yet WinME is working OK so far.

Just have all these folders and files that belong to XP and will try
removing some eventually.  I really don't want to format this....so playing
it by ear.

Kissies.....Figgroll

So you're upgrading ME rather than doing a clean installation?

That I did.......and it was a mess!!  I am slowly picking my way thru the
minefield and removing unnecessary folders and with some help, fixing
drivers, etc.  Got that Device Manager Code 15 one cleared up, thanks to
Noel's instructions.

Poor ole computer....turned 4 yrs. old last week......didn't like XP.  So if
I ever do put it on again, it will be on another hard drive so I can dual
boot.  Which was my original plan.

Cheers......Figgs

You don't need another HD - merely another partition (I *know* you were
looking for an excuse to use that copy of PM that's sitting there!<g>)

ROFL!!  I have no secrets anymore!!  That was for the dual boot situation,
which I never got to try.

You know Who will get you.....if I don't, lol.

Huh, like you don't get to the sheep first!

rofl! I think I'll disable scandisk on bad shutdowns now! Then I'll go out
back and take a whizz on the catenary, after all I've taken thousands of
whizzes and they haven't hurt me yet!
