You seem to have tried all the obvious 'fixes', Eileen. Beginning to run out
of ideas. But, as Dave suggested earlier, it looks like an OS issue.
However, just a couple of other suggestions which may be worth a go.
Start | Run and type "scanreg /fix" in the 'Open:' box (no quotes and note
the space between g and /) then OK. See if that helps.
Control Panel | Fonts and Open each one in turn (Yes! I know you've got 171
of them <g>) and see if any appear in Greek. You *may* be able to find an
offender that way.
Might also be worth a look in Display Properties / Appearance and see if
there are any odd fonts being used there. (Try to 'cancel' any accidental
changes you make - or better still, set an SR point before you start <g>)
Beyond that - and a last resort - possibly a re-install or even a clean
install of WinMe.

Mart,
I did the scanreg /fix and nothing changed.
On to checking out each font...and this is strange.
Checking 'Symbol 8,10,12,14,18,24'......there are three of these listed.....
and Symbols GST. These four fonts, when checked, look like Greek.... but
when I print them out they are squares, circles, triangles, arrows and a
hand.
Should I delete them? Didn't want to do that until I knew it was safe.
Thanks, Eileen

NO!! - Don't delete them, they are System Fonts.
But as a matter of interest, are they 'exactly' the same fonts that you are
seeing in Ad-aware?
Still don't have any answers yet.

Mart,
As far as I can tell, they are the same. I checked both PhotoScan and
Ad-aware.

Eileen, I've lost the jpeg which you down loaded earlier (but please don't
send it again!) so I can't re-compare it.
Open WordPad and type the word - Status - (in whatever font you normally
use)
Then change the font to Symbol.
Does the word now look like the first button in Ad-aware. If so, then - for
some reason - your pc is using the Symbol font instead of probably Arial or
a similar font.
Still don't know why <g> - but check 'Appearance' settings for a 'symbol'
entry.

Mart,
It looks exactly the same.
Maybe we are getting somewhere... at least we now know the font that these
two programs are using... but why.
I went into Display/Appearance. A lot of the listing didn't have a chosen
font, so I chose Times Roman Western and applied. Is this okay?
Thanks, Eileen

You might want to try "Tahoma" or "Verdana" for Display --> appearance --> item
for the associated fonts @ 10 pts.

I would agree with David, those are probably the best fonts. (And thanks for
chipping-in Dave, it was way past my bed-time here <g>)
I'm running XP here so I can't help you as to precisely which setting you
need to look at in WinMe - trial and error I'm afraid. But there are an
awful lot of settings to choose from to determine exactly which one affects
your buttons.
Be sure that you've set an SR point before you start - at least then you
should be able to get back to where you are now, if all goes pear-shaped <g>
Good luck

I changed my font to Tahoma.
I heard by from HP Photo Scan and they want me to download a driver to see
if that corrects the language problem there. I have to leave the house now
but will try to find time later.
Thanks, Eileen
