Boot to a DOS prompt using a Win Me boot floppy and at the A:\> prompt
type
SCANREG /RESTORE
and restore a copy of the registry that predates the onset of your
problems.

If you're not on a WinME system right now, then:
www.bootdisk.com

Should take a few seconds only. What messages did you see when you typed
SCANREG /RESTORE
at the DOS prompt?

mike,

screen. after about minute you could hear it click onto floppy drive then,
A:> was at top of page then nothing happened.

Kate,
In which case something appears to be very wrong. On typing SCANREG
/RESTORE at the A:\> DOS prompt you should see the screen turn blue with
the following text displayed:
At the top of the screen the words: Microsoft Registry Checker in pale
blue and underlined.
Beneath that in a grey box a list of (up to) five rb00?.cab files, each
with to its left a date below which appears the words Restore and Cancel
At the bottom of the screen the words, again in pale blue and underlined,
"Select a cab to restore from."
When booting from the boot floppy make sure you select either option 2 or
3, that is with or without CD support and not option 4 - Minimal.

You can download the image of a Win Me OEM boot disk from
www.bootdisk.com. Download to your desktop,
double click to run and follow the prompts to transfer the image to a
floppy. Do NOT copy the downloaded file to a floppy - that won't make a
bootable floppy but instead a floppy disk containing the file you
downloaded.
This can be done on any PC and then the floppy used to boot the problem PC
to DOS.

have tried doing as you have said but still getting error message, even tried
this
from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=279736
(didn't do notes bit)
To start the System Restore tool when you cannot start your Windows Me-based
computer normally or in Safe mode, you can temporarily change the Windows
shell from Explorer.exe to Progman.exe: 1. Start your computer by using the
Windows Me Startup disk.
2. At the Startup menu, choose Minimum Boot.
3. At the command prompt, type edit c:\windows\system.ini, and then press
ENTER.
4. Edit the shell= line so that it looks like this:
shell=progman.exe
5. Press ALT+F, and then press S to save the changes to the System.ini file.
6. Press ALT+F, and then press X.
7. Remove your Windows Me Startup disk, and then restart your computer. When
your computer restarts, Program Manager should start. If Program Manager does
not start, repeat steps 1 through 7, being careful to follow these steps
exactly, and then continue to the next step.
8. On the File menu, click Run, type msconfig in the Command Line box, and
then press ENTER.
9. Click Launch System Restore to begin restoring your computer to a
previous, functional state.
Notes
• After you configure your computer to start Program Manager (Progman.exe),
you can also start the System Restore tool by typing
c:\windows\system\restore\rstrui.exe at a command prompt, and then pressing
ENTER.
• If you still cannot use System Restore, repeat steps 1 through 6. In step
4, change the shell= line so that it reads:
shell=explorer.exe
This sets the Windows shell back to Explorer.exe so that you can continue
troubleshooting.
