I just realized that the automatic downloading program for Windows Updating
was not implemented.   Checking if I had the 891711.exe issued on Jan 11/05
and updated April 12/05 (V.2) is not downloaded. Furthermore the update for
891781 on Feb 8/05 and updated Feb 15/05 (v.1.1) is also missing.

On the other hand, in the Microsoft Windows Update, under "Windows Me
Edition" shows 8 updates missing including the two above.  Will deal with
these two first then look into the others.

Furthermore the "Critical Updates and Service Packs" show 24 updates,
however the majority applies to XP etc.

The "View installation history" show the updates up to sometime in 2003 are
downloaded...puzzling.

Do I have to download all the critical updates and Service Packs, since they
are not all for WIN Me?  Dont think so.   What about the 8 marked for WIN?
Think so.   Your advice appreciated.

I'm not sure where you're seeing patches that are for WinXP - if you go to
Windows Update and allow it to check your system, you will see ONLY patches
that are appropriate for your system.
you need to download ALL the Critical patches - but only two or three (at
most) at a time, before rebooting and going back for more.... repeat until
complete.

Tks for response, and sorry for delay (was away on and off).
I have looked at the downloads suggested for Win Me and havent found one
that suits my own needs.  I dont use this machine for listening to music and
movies and games.  Maybe I'm way off base.   As far as the
24 "Critical updates and service packs", I'll go through them later.
   Regards,   Paul

1) DirectX 9.oC.  Takes over 3 hrs download.  I dont use Music nor games.
Have 8.1 version.  Think will leave it at that.
"Simply put, DirectX is a Windows technology that enables higher performance
in graphics and sound when you’re playing games or watching video on your PC.

2)Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1   Download size: 23.1 MB, 2 hours 20
minutes.  :You need to install the .NET Framework only if you have software
that requires it:  dont have any.

3) Internet Explorer Navigation Sound Update.  "Download now if Internet
Explorer stops responding when you use the navigation buttons in Internet
Explorer."  Dont have this problem.

4)Euro Conversion Tool:  dont need this.

5) Windows Movie Maker Update: I dont make Home movies: not needed.

6)Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package: "This update introduces a two second
delay in the shutdown process, which allows the hard drive's cache to write
any data to the hard drive. Download now to delay your shutdown process
slightly to prevent data loss".
I've always waited a few seconds before hitting the button for shut down and
works ok.

7)Windows Media Player 9 Series*  Dont play music, and v.10 is out

8)Windows Media 9 Series Codec Install Package:   same as above.

- I agree, you don't need the optional updates (BTW, WMP10 won't install
onto WinME anyhow - it's NT-based only) - but you should certainly install
the Critical ones ASAP - just two or three at a time, rather than all at
once.

Need your insights.   I remember last spring after two month absence
there was quite a mess with KB891781.  As you know from my previous posts
that the Win updates are in the Manual mode.  I've already took care of the
ones marked "WIN Me" (didnt load any of them = not needed) and now I've got
24 earmarked as critical (well less the 8 above) thats 16 offered for
download;  one is the famous KB891781, just wondering if its worth
downloading in the first place, and if yes it will be a manual download.  How
do i make sure its the April 15 version 4.10.2223?

The only one you'll be offered is the fixed version - no worries about that

Paul,

It's essential that amongst other critical updates that you install
891711.  Don't worry about downloading the wrong version, the original
version was withdrawn in early April when the updated version was
released.
