christina - 24 Aug 2005 17:39 GMT Scan this hd (from another pc) as slave with NAV2005 (with the latest definitions) and it deleted most of the virus/trojan.(some of the infections were Adware.Vtbar, Trojan.Adclicker,Downloader.Trojan) But I still cannot get mypc to function normally.
Firstly when I put back into its own pc and click my computer - there is no icons inside. There will be a message saying "" Microsoft IE -your current security setting prohibits running Active X control on this page. As a result the page cannot sdisplay correctly""
When I go to tools/IE and set the security tag to the lowest level, it still does not display properly The system was newly reinstall and unfortunately the young ones have gone to the internet without any protection and now the pc have 'AIDS'. Please advice how can I get the pc going as I cant even do a quick recovery as it just cannot recognised or at least not display there is an CD Rom drive. Appreciate if anyone can assist, many thanks
Noel Paton - 24 Aug 2005 19:52 GMT 1) Reboot to Safe Mode 2) Disable Web Content and/or Active Desktop 3) run SCANDISK /FIX from the Start|Run wizard.
See how much that helps.

That is when I click on my pc, it does not shows the icon. Under sage mode, it will show the 4 icons.

That #3 should have read.....
3) Start|Run - type
SCANREG /FIX
and click OK - Windows will want to reboot - let it do so, and see if that helps.

At the bottom of the page, it will say 4 objects.
When in normal mode, when I click "my computer", it will show nothing, no icons but at the bootom of the page, it will say 5 objects, so no idea what they are.
When I try a system restore, I try on the earliest date, all of them saying "your computer cannot restore to...whatever date I choose. The earliest date i can choose is 22 june. This pc, a system recovery was not not long ago but went to the internet without proper protection and now I cant even do a system recovery. The sytem recovery disc will just fail to initialised.
Diagnostic run on the hard disk - its ok Change the CD Rom Drive, cable etc and problem remains the same
When in bios, it does detect the cd rom drive.FYI, Just now when I try to use 'MS WORD' it ask me to insert CD and it was able to run and prompt fme for the cd key no, so it shows Cd Rom Drive is ok.
Where can the problem lies? ..... looking forward for your help, thanks

As a result the page may not display correctly"
I change the security setting, "All then ActiveX controls and plug-ins" are enabled. That does not help either..
The strange thing if I may say is when I click recycle bin, it will also give this Microsoft Internet Exploere message and after I click 'ok', it will show the items that I have in the recycle bin. When I click :my documents", it will show the items inside.
well......... just dont know whats seems to 'hold' up "my computer" or prevent me to do system recovery.

To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on the file, and select Properties. What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch.
To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download the patch for offline install http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q290700 Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time, clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and creating a single new one. You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as Office.

Can you now create a System Restore point?
Have you disabled 'View as Web Page' in Folder Options???
Have you gone to Internet Options and reset everything in Security and Privacy sections to Default??

In My Document/ Folder Dption/View - I cannot find "View as web Page"
IE Security has been set to Default level.
Your guess it correct, fiddle with Bios partly due to desperation and also been advice by Compaq. Just could not understand why when I try to do a System Recovery from the CD, it cannot get pass "Compaq" Quick Restore logo.
thanks

I have found and disable "View as web page". Its under tool-general tag , and check "use Windows classic folders". So it can now display the content in "my computer" and also the MSIE message does not appear anymore.
Many thanks for your patience and now I am to the next phase how to make it more secure before going into the internet world.
