boot problem coincides with AVG update

After AVG update prompted restart the pc hung on WinME splashscreen.  After
several attempts I decided to use the boot disk.
Last time I did so I was able to use option 1 to get to some helpful info
but this time it didn't fully proceed after I selected option 1.  Options
2,3, and 4 - Booting with or without CD rom support and minimal boot don't
give me a prompt or boot.  I get A: and can cd to C: using F5 "safemode" and
Shift-F5 "command prompt".  But when I typed scanreg /restore I got "data
error reading drive c".
Now when I start without the boot disk it  hangs on a flashing cursor.
After about 10 mins it will go to the winme splashscreen and hang.  I just
happend to notice this because I left the pc on while reading and posting
here.  I almost thought it was going to boot, but drat no.
The error reading c has me alarmed.  I didn't get the %1%2 error so I havent
tried to remane wininit but did consider it.  The only problem is Im not sure
exactly where it is and can't remember DOS to get the dir by page.  It
involved |  (pipe?...on the \ key) so if I should rename wininit Ill need
that info too.
I fear reinstalling WinME.  Is there a way to do it, if I need to, that
preserves my other files (yeah there's some unbacked-up stuff).
It's weird, the pc seems to be in very slow motion.  I just tried starting
in safemode without the boot disk and after several minutes got the usual
options but normal and safemode attempts hang on the winme splashscreen.
What could this be?  Im going to just leave it on and see if it boots.
Any advice at this point would be very appreciated.
BTW this is a Dell and the four LEDs on back are green indicating its
working...Im confused.

Using bootdisk to get a prompt I was able to start scandisk.  It got to 36%,
stopped and reported an error and that it would try to proceed and I should
accept a fix if offered.  It never moved.  I tried again and got the error
reading drive c again.  Just thought Id add this in case it means something.

FWIW......I have used EZ Trust for about 5 years at least.......starting
when it was the free InoculateIT PE.  I paid for renewals for 2 or 3 years
and then MS came out with a free copy.  So last year I downloaded that one
and it was expiring in 2 days.  I did ask CA if I could and they gave me the
go-ahead, grin.

On the antivirus group, Dave Lipman (I think) was saying that one could
download a free copy of EZ Trust once again instead of renewing.  So I just
tried downloading the advertised freebie and it worked!!  I did put in a
different email address, but the rest of the info was the same.

I really like EZ Trust and would have paid for a renewal if I had to.  It
updates every day for instance and is very unobtrusive.  I prefer it over
AVG or Avast!.

The following link gives you a year's free trial.  I still had my old
version on here and had absolutely no problem downloading it.  I then
removed the old one and rebooted and installed the new one and the expiry
date is now Aug. 27, 2006!!  Plus it was set up the same way my old one
was.....I don't allow it to scan downloading emails.  So there obviously was
a record of my settings in the Registry.

Try it.......

Yep.......new modem and it was the network card that got fried!!  Willy had
warned me about that.  The guys were really nice and they were not supposed
to give me the new modem, but, well......you know how *blondes* do stuff,
grin.  They connected it via a USB port to bypass the fried card.

The guy 3 doors down took a direct hit of lightning straight down his
chimney....10 feet away from him.  Lots of lovely blue light bouncing
around.  Luckily he went to the basement to find his computer smoking and
the mouse was in flames!!  So I got hit thru the ground electricity from his
hit.

I don't pretend to understand electricity, but have learned a lot in the
past few days.......whew!!  My surge protector was probably of no help....it
came thru the phone wires I think.  Willy said that there have been a lot of
folks coming in to his shop with fried computers and modems.  He is only
about 5 minutes away as the crow flies.

This has been the wierdest weather I have ever seen!!  Storms don't usually
worry me, but I was getting a tad edgy with this one.  I wonder if Rick got
flooded out......his side of Toronto had nasty flooding and sewage backup.
He should live over here on the *good* side......grin.

At the time I was further east (Oshawa), oohing and ahhing and keeping a
bunch of kids from running out and playing in the rain; normally it
woulda been "sure go ahead, if you look up don't keep your mouth open",
but we saw lightning nail somebody's TV antenna a few times less than
100 yds. away; downspouts were shooting out firehose-sized streams of
water for hours.   Meanwhile back at the ranch our neighbourhood has a
creek runs through it about 10' down so we had some drainage; a couple
blocks over a powerline field and people's backyards bordering on it was
a small lake.

At least it wasn't snow.

Glad to hear you didn't suffer in the storm Rick, it sounds like quite a
nasty one and then there's that hurricane hitting Florida, I think I'll
stay this side of the pond thank you very much <g>

forgot I left the car window open just a little :(

I was east of the really nasty stuff (a little north of Heather they
were hosting tornados) while it was happening.

out today <g>

Glad to hear you're OK Heather, and I can imagine it must have been quite
frightening. Hope your neighbour is alright and no one was hurt.
I suppose this means a further delay in getting that XP box <g>

Thanks.  I'll never  be sure what happened but I won't be recommending AVG
again.

FYI: The latest version of EZ AV is 7.0.7.7. You can get it here:
ftp://ftpez.ca.com/pub/myeTrust/apps/EZAntivirus.exe

This is the latest version so I updated to it today......the one at the link
below is slightly less than that.

Heather:

When tryng to download from this link, I got the following error message:
"Internet Explorer cannot download EZAntivirus.exe from ftpez.com. The
connection with the server was reset."
After threee attempts I gave up.
What could possibly be the cause?

I don't have a clue!!  I downloaded it quite easily using Firefox.

I just now checked the link and got the download perfectly OK.  It must be a
problem with your computer.  Says she with tongue in cheek, grin.

Ain't no problem with that link, Harry.

Never mind, Heather:
After reading one of your earlier posts, I downloaded from there with total
success.
Thanks for the leads.

There is nothing wrong with the link, Heather, the server just quit half way
through the download. Have no idea why.
So far it was the only case, as of late.
I'm not going to worry about it either.

Hmmm.....had a problem (Error #3) this morning with this version.

However, it could have been one of the following......

1.  My previous EZ Armor (of which I only used the antivirus part) expired
at midnight last night.

2.  I didn't think to go into Windows Explorer and totally remove all
folders, etc.  There was still an EZ Armor folder in there.

3.  The below version appears to be a BETA one......

So not knowing what caused the problem, I uninstalled everything to do with
EZ Trust and removed the folder from Windows Explorer.......and then went
back to version 7.0.6.7 (the first download I told you about).....and now it
is working just fine.

Just thought I had best warn you......could be my machine or could be the
beta version.......could be a lot of things, grin.

Cheers.....Auntie Virus

Awwwww......you missed me, you really missed me (to paraphrase Sally Field,
grin).

Yep.....hanging around, but I see that the Loon must be hanging out with the
*leet* crowd now that he has that super duper machine.

Forgot to mention.....the error was that I absolutely could not update.  I
think there were still bits of about 3 versions on here, so reinstalled it
properly.

Some people swear on AVG, I don't.
Prefer Avast any day.
