Processor usage 50% with nothing running

Hi All............
Could someone be so kind as to please explain why my System Monitor shows my
Processor usage running between 50% and 75% while I have nothing open that I
am aware of, except the System Monitor?   It used to rull well below 25%.
And, whenever I start to do most "anything', it pegs out to 100% and stays
there and whatever I'm doing runs very slowly.....machine is 1.2GB AMD,
512MB RAM.

System Properties, PerformanceTab shows System Resources to be 57%
free..........but that's with OE6 open also.  I have ran AVG Free Antivirus,
(Norton will not run for some reason), Ad-Aware, RegClean, RegistryMechanic,
SpySweeper, Spybot, and Yahoo's Spyware checker.........everything has been
cleaned out.  And, incidently, I'm only getting a 100-200kb speed rating
from PcPitstop whereas my laptop is getting 2000kb through the
WirelessRouter to the same Cable.

Any suggestions would be appreciated............

Win Me's system monitor is a very poor indication of cpu usage due to the
use of a faulty algorithm.   You will get a more reliable reading by using
a process viewer such as the aged WinTop (still available from Microsoft -
"Windows 95 Kernel Toys Set"
Note though that it is referred to on that page as "Windows Process
Watcher" and can be happily used with Win Me despite the warnings about
not using the tools with Win 98) or a product such as Process Explorer
from SysInternals
(http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html).

Thanks Mike............
I went and got it....it's maybe more accurate, but certainly not as user
friendly as Me's System Monitor............if' if's broke, ain't there no
fix for it?....or is there a better commercial
one?...............incidently, it still gives nearly the 100% busy
indication, which is my problem................

WinTop is far easier to use than SysMon, is free, and requires no
configuration.  Not only that but it lists all running processes together
with their instantaneous %cpu usage and their cumulative usage over time.
Note there's no need to install any other part of the KernelToys - just
WinTop.  I've never felt the need for any other process monitor when
running Win Me.

Well at least using a process viewer you now know which process is using
those cpu cycles.  Why not share that detail with the newsgroup then
someone might be able to help.  If it's stmgr.exe then I'll explain what
is happening tomorrow since I'm off to bed since it's 3.30am here.
