Keyboard and mouse VERY slow

Having problems with keyboard and mouse response. Sometimes, keyboard or
mouse will take up to 10 seconds to respond to inputs. Almost seems like I
have a key logger or the system is very busy with other tasks. Also, takes
as long as 3 minutes for boot sequence to complete.
Have done the following:
(1) Installed latest mouse driver
(2) Ran the following scans: McAfee VirusScan, Panda online virus scan,
Housecall virus scan, SpyDoctor, AdAware, Spybot S&D, TrojanHunter... all
clean!
(3) Ran Process Viewer. Current log as follows:

Do you have a wireless Keyboard and Mouse? If so, are the batteries new?

Good thought.  My sealed ones that came with the mouse lasted exactly 8
days!!  Willy had given me extras coz he knew how lousy they were.

Heather
PS.....he says they only last about 4 months at best.

Get rid of your Memory Managers - all they do is crucify the system!!
Freemem is more appropriately called KillMem
see if that helps.

In answer to other 2 posts: no wireless keyboard or mouse. Still using
originals.

I have been using FreeMem for 4 years now with no problems. I have disabled
it from the Startup and still no joy. Any other ideas would be most welcome!

What shows there that doesn't while in Normal Mode - particularly for the
mouse/keyboard??

Booted to Safe Mode. Nothing different in Device Manager from in Normal
mode.

Mouse and keyboard work fine in Safe Mode.

In that case, your system is one-of-a-kind!! - there is ALWAYS something
different when in Safe Mode, or you aren't looking!!
I still think it's a device driver problem - probably worth doing this
anyhow
Boot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Keyboard devices
Remove ALL mouse devices
Shut down the machine and unplug from the mains for 2 minutes
Plug back in, then boot to Normal Mode - Windows should reinstall the
correct drivers. Make a note of any error messages (it may want to reboot at
some point).

detected". During "Updating Hardware Information Database" Missing File
Error message: File missing HIDVKD.SYS Path C:\Windows\Options\Cabs
Keyboard still problematic, mouse seems better
Thanks again for all your help, Lorne

Have you tried using a keyboard you know works?

Don't have one I can use and don't feel like buying one for testing only.
I'm not convinced that this is the problem. I have a suspicion that this is
only a symptom. Other bugs include changing of the icons on the Desktop, and
other display bugs.

HIDVKD.SYS would indicate a USB keyboard.

As the file is 'missing' from the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder (which
indicates an OEM version of WinMe) it would appear that you *may* no longer
have anything in that folder or its been deleted.

See if there is a C:\Windows\Options\Instal folder - one or other of those
folders *should* contain a complete copy of your WinMe installation files.

However, you should be able to extract a fresh copy of HIDVKD.SYS from your
WinMe CD in the \win9x\BASE2.CAB file. You could also try re-directing the
path to the \win9x folder on the WinMe CD.

When I did a search for HIDVKD.SYS it was present in the
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS folder. Has it been installed? Could the
keyboard/mouse problems be symptoms of something else? When I booted into
Safe Mode, the keyboard and mouse worked fine, no lags/delays.
For example, in Normal Mode when I use the right context menu to "Open With"
on a file, it takes as long as 1 minute to give me the dialog box with my
choices of applications. I have also been getting more blue screen errors
lately. When I booted up for this session, I received the following blue
screen error: File name: PERF (05) +000001B7 Error 0E : 0028 : C0240CE3
(never seen this one before!)
Thanks again for all your help.

Certainly sounds like Driver issues if they work ok in Safe Mode (no drivers
required!).  PERF (05) suggests 5 attempts at trying to enumerate something
(don't know what!) when going into Normal Mode. - NB perf.vxd is a Virtual
Device Driver.

Suggest that you not only try Noel's advice again :-

"In that case, your system is one-of-a-kind!! - there is ALWAYS something
different when in Safe Mode, or you aren't looking!!
I still think it's a device driver problem - probably worth doing this
anyhow
Boot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Keyboard devices
Remove ALL mouse devices
Shut down the machine and unplug from the mains for 2 minutes. Plug back in,
then boot to Normal Mode - Windows should reinstall the correct drivers.
Make a note of any error messages (it may want to reboot at some point)."

but also look out for any/all other multiple entries or yellow
exclamation/question marks in Device Manager in Safe Mode and Remove/Delete
them ALL (including duplicates) before rebooting. Hopefully, your hardware
will be re-detected (enumerated) correctly and get things working again.

You could even try throwing all non-essential hardware off and see if that
helps, then reconnecting one piece at a time to see if you can identify the
offender.

BTW - this also ASS-U-ME's that you are still clear of viruses etc. <g>

Just a little worried about the Path C:\Windows\Options\Cabs statement and
the apparently missing folder/files - Anything else missing?? If you don't
have the installation files available, it could give you trouble - and
raises the question 'Why are they missing?'
