Hi. I am having problems with McAfee SecurityCenter, VirusScan and
AntiSpyware. It started a couple of weeks ago when updates appear to be
taking a long while to install. The installation process was stopping during
the installtion process while installing Microsoft Layer for Unicode. My PC
is running Windows ME. IE version is 6.0.2800.1106IS. VirusScan version was
10. So far I have cleared all the Internet Explorer temporary files and
Cache. Amended the IE settings as recommended by McAfee (Active X controls
etc.) Stoped using pop-up blockers. Checked and cleared Registry entries
and per instructions from McAfee From DOS carried out a virus check– no virus
found. Uninstalled VirusScan – I now cannot reinstall VirusScan – it fails
while installing Microsoft Layer for Unicode. An update for the
SecurityCenter is also failing at the same point. I have not installed any
new software. McAfee cannot come up with any more ideas. Anybody have any
ideas as to why it is failing and what I can do to get things working again.
this may be relevant.....(ignore the references to Norton)
Have you been running with the Quack?
Are you running Norton System Quack - - errr - Doctor?
If so, then read on......
You may have up to 32,000 empty OEM*.INF files sitting in your
c:\Windows\INF folder, which prevents any program putting a legitimate *.INF
file in there (it also slow your system down to stop, trying to read them
and sort the [non-existent] contents!).
You need to DELETE all 0byte (and ONLY the 0byte) OEM*.INF files.
look here for information on how to do that , and how to prevent it
happening again (i.e. TURN OFF NORTON SYSTEM DOCTOR - unless you are
actively troubleshooting something)

It was more an educated guess than anything else - glad I got it right, for
once!

Duh - I just checked the Symantec link I gave you - and it's busted
(again! - they really like to hide the useful stuff, changing the links
every week, it seems like!)
Here's the new version.....

Actually, this is a DCOM installation problem also noted in Office 2000.
DCOM is required for this particular Norton product installation. Its cause
by mdm.exe, Machine Debug Manager from MS. Mdm.exe can also be called from
IE for script debugging. Its an option in IE that can be manually disabled
in IE's settings.
Mdm.exe should be removed from the run section in the registry as well.
This will eliminate the zero byte file creation. Will not affect Norton's
applications.
Mixing Norton and McAfee is a stew for disaster. One should go.

You're right, I know nothing, never touched a PC in my life, no experience,
don't know what I'm talking about.

Lil' Dave,
You obviously know a lot about Windows. But the Norton System Doctor
zero-byte inf problem has nothing whatsoever to do with Machine Debug
Manager.
