When I click on a program icon on my desktop programs will open twice. Any
way to disable this so programs only open once?

If Mike's solution doesn't fix it, then it's possibly a faulty micro-switch
under the left-button. Try substituting/replacing the mouse.

In the meantime, a quick check is to 'reverse' the L and R buttons in the
Mouse Properties in Control Panel (or on the tray) and see if the R button
any behaves better.
