kernel32.dll error when opening Windows Explorer, My Documents etc

Whenever I try to open Windows Explorer, My Documents and  My Network Places,
I get a kernel32.dll invalid page fault error.  More often than not, I have
to restore the active desktop after closing the error window.

Internet Explorer will not open.

I've removed .pwl files
I've changed the memory module & run a diagnostic on the memory
System restore won't restore, even though I've gone back to last month after
restore points this month don't work.

Can anyone advise please

Thanks

Jackie

try a registry repair -
Start|Run
type

SCANREG   /FIX

click OK (or hit [Enter])
Windows will ask for a reboot.

See if that helps - if not, boot ot Safe Mode, and see if Explorer works
there.
please give the EXACT and COMPLETE error message - often one word can make a
difference in diagnosis.

Registry repair made no difference.

I perhaps should have mentioned that I can access Windows Explorer in Safe
Mode.

I've captured a couple of the error messages which have occurred on
different boot-ups:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 016f:bff611be.

Ah - if Explorer works OK in Safe mode then it's likely either a driver
problem or a background program interfering (usually malware of some kind)

look here for instructions on how to clean up your startup axis, preventing
unnecessary programs loading
(enter any item in the startup list in MSCONFIG into the search box on the
page, and click Search)
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

for detailed instructions - look here
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files while in
Safe Mode.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system.

There were viruses & spyware on the system before I started this thread.  I'd
used AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy, AVG to clean everything out.  I've run
them all again, in Safe mode & normal mode, plus CWShredder.  All say the
system is clean, but still the problem.

I think a reinstall is going to be the easiest option now...

Thanks for your help.

Have you checked the Device Manager in Safe Mode?? - anything duplicated or
error-flagged??
