Red starcut spinnaker - 12 Feb 2006 14:59 GMT I've done all of the below items Noel stated here, and my audio is still kaput. The speaker icon in the startup taskbar does not appear, but an empty space for it does. How to I find the driver on the Microsoft web site, and remove the corrupt one, replacing it with the new one? Or are there other remedies I can try to bring back the sound?

Noel Paton - 12 Feb 2006 15:09 GMT MS doesn't supply drivers - the card manufacturers do You need to find out what card is installed on your machine - try using aida32 (from http://www.aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php#aida32) - install and run it - it will tell you the make and model of the sound devices, and you can then go to the manufacturer's website for the latest ME drivers

Red starcut spinnaker - 13 Feb 2006 03:25 GMT Found the card and downloaded the new driver and installed. Still no audio icon appears in task bar nor is there operation of sound. Any other suggestions or remedies to try?

Noel Paton - 13 Feb 2006 08:54 GMT Have you checked the speakers? - unplug them from the mains and the PC for 10 minutes, and then plug them back in - see if that helps The icon can be switched on from inside the Sound Properties UI in Control Panel

Have you checked that the speakers are plugged into the correct socket, it's an easy mistake to make. Regards Mike.

Red starcut spinnaker - 13 Feb 2006 15:30 GMT Sounds and Multimedia Properties / Sounds / . . . the Sound Volume slider does not function (light grey field) and the check box for "show volume control on the taskbar" is also inoperative, but the box is checked. Computer is a ThinkPad i Series Four Model 1300. Speakers operate, since occasionally will emit a faint 'pop' when retreiving mail, etc. Is there a diagnostic that I could run . . . other suggestions?

You may be able to find something similar in your setup, but it is unlikely to 'solve' your problem. Usually a total uninstall ( including removal of the sound card, if appliccable, with a fresh reinstall of the card and the program will do the trick. Did you check your three connections in the back, as Mike suggested?

Red starcut spinnaker - 23 Feb 2006 04:46 GMT Well, it took awhile, but . . . it's back! Things actually got worse before getting better. Downloaded two new MS Critical Updates and wound up with errors at startup not recognising newly installed hardware (there was none). Lots of lock ups and cold boots later, and tryed to work around this. System Restore would not operate earlier, but I finally defragged in Safe Mode, then ran System Restore several times unsuccessfully . . . the third time with restore point of nearly 2 months ago ran properly, and I now have audio back, plus my powermonitor works as well. MS Windows remains fickle, and a mystery to me, but it's running once more! Thanks for your assistance.

What are the symptoms of your 'fickle' state in windows?
Harry.

Noel Paton - 26 Feb 2006 08:27 GMT Try starting a new thread - it's *extremely* unlikely to be exactly the same problem, as this one was a rather strange one!

Millions of lines of code layered on top of each other seems to cause trouble everytime one turns around. For instance, after solving this audio and battery problem, I now find that my MS Word program is shot. The software loads an Word document, but then appears an error message "Winword has caused and error in HPFWIN20.DLL. Winword will now close." This takes me out of using word processing until I remedy this new problem. Could be tied to a Microsoft Critical Update, the latest I downloaded seems timely with the problem, but who knows? That update was KB908519. I have no way of knowing how to uninstall this update. I've uninstalled MS Office and reinstalled it. Still get the same error message. Any ideas on this one?

Noel Paton - 24 Feb 2006 15:23 GMT Most problems with Word are the result of a corrupted Normal.dot template file - try doing a Search for files of that name and rename all found to Normal.jnk - the reboot and try again.
