I have seen my question posted before but have not seen any satisfactory answers so far. I have Windows ME on a GenuineIntel Pentium III processor. I would like to password protect my PC but ME has this ingenious idea that, when Windows in password protected, a log-in window come up and the user has the choice of either entering the user name or password or simply clicking Cancel. (Is that great protection or what! I hope MS doesn't provide software to my bank or to airport security.) I saw someone suggest going to "My Network Places", choosing Properties and setting the "Primary Network Login" to "Windows Logon". No difference. I then tried password protection using BIOS. It doesn't stop Windows starting up but asks for a password to get into BIOS and doesn't accept the password I have for Windows. Two questions. 1/ Can anyone tell me if there is any way to actually password protect Windows ME or do I need to get another OS? 2/ Can anyone tell me how I can now access BIOS? Peter, With Windows ME everything is possible. As Mike Maltby posted, this was never intended to be a secure OS, but rather for the Home User. If you really need to secure your PC, start by taking a look at alternative versions of Windows, also as posted: 2000 or even better XP, if your hardware and software can cope with it. Win Me was never intended to be a secure system. If that is your requirement then you should consider using either Win2K or better XP as both of these are designed for such use. In the way that you have always done. If you have assigned a password, use that password. Note that the operating system in use on a PC has nothing to do with any password that might be required to access the bios. In the instrustions, it says to create a startup disk (which I have done). It then says to "Save the valid_no.reg and valid_ok.reg files that were included in the ZIP to your Startup Disk". There is a zip file on my startup disk but it does not include files of those names. Thanks, Peter. Yep - either Home or Pro versions are capable of preventing unauthorised logons - one of the essential differences of the two, however, is that in Pro, it is possible to encrypt your data so that it is (effectively) impossible to read from another logon or alternate boot. I do not think I assigned it a password. I thought it would use the password I had for Windows but apparently that was a mistake. Is there some way I can get in and change it? When I start typing, it will not let me finish but puts an X and asks for the password again. After doing this 3 times, it goes to Windows. The opposite effect of what I had intended. Thanks, Peter. You probably chose the wrong security/password option in the BIOS. If the BIOS password security is well configured there is no way that the pc will relinquish after three password attempts then just allow the computer to boot up. It's conceivable that you chose an option that disallows unauthorized access to the BIOS but still allows the computer to boot. Such an option would prevent users from making critical changes to the computer hardware configuration yet allow them to use the operating system. If you select the proper password option the pc should not boot even if you try a thousand times!
